The awesome Tumblr blog Noirlacsourced is attempting to fix an annoying problem which has been a pain for a while now: providing sources to the pixel art posted by the largely popular blog Noirlac. Despite being a blog devoted to showing how great of a art video game art can be, they never credit the games shown, and even (illegally) sell merchandise with the art on. Noirlacsourced is doing a great thing by doing this, but they are only one person and google image reverse search isn't perfect (especially as Noirlac has a tendency to alter the art subtlety, turning it into gifs and stuff), so they've started a list, which can be found here, of all the one's so far they can't recognise. On my Tumblr I have uploaded every currently unknown image on the list, to make looking at them much easier. The list is updated from time to time, so if you're interested in helping out, don't forget the check from time to time. The range of games used vary in genre, so whoever you are and whatever games you prefer, I advise you to have a look, as every little helps! Some genre's which seem to pop up a lot are nes/snes/sega platformers, point and click adventures, japanese visual novel (and hentai) games, fighting games and rpg's/jrpg's, so any fans of those will be very helpful indeed, but as i said, all genre fans can help in some way. For the sake of satisfaction and fun, post the one's you recognise in this thread. If you have a tumblr, tell them the one's you recognise by clicking "Hm?" on their blog and linking to the one's you know by using the number of the post (For example, "56276160869 is from Earthbound"). If you lack a Tumblr or for some reason don't want to message them about the one's you know, say so in your post here and I'll tell them for you. I hope some of you can help out with this!

I've been looking for new tumblr stuff to follow, so thanks for the heads up on this one. Looks really cool. Hopefully I can recognize something in the "unknown" category.

Thanks for taking an interest, and no problem, It's a pretty awesome blog. Video game art is so awesome, kind of a shame about all the epileptic fit inducing gif's tho.
Also I am fairly confident now they took a number of screenshots from this site. Screenshots of games like El Dorado Denki and Jigoku no Renshuu Mondai aren't exactly common online.

Noirlac kind of sucks for the reasons you've stated - he even goes as far to get angry when people *steal* (don't credit) his gifs, like seriously I can't even fathom the kind of mind it takes to act so entitled while reblogging other peoples hard work without citations.
Honestly I don't really have it in me to go through them at the moment but there's a large amount of PC88/98 sprites he's uploaded and that'll be a nightmare to cite.

Holy shit that is both hilarious and crazy. It's like when Ray William Johnson started forcing people to take down videos which contained the viral videos he showcases but not any footage of him - bizarre. Oddly enough Noirlac hasn't updated in a week. Maybe he's reconsidering his blog after getting some messages about it? Or maybe he's on holiday, who the fuck knows. Yeah the pc88/98 adventure games sprites are definitely a pain in the ass. Next to no pictures online to compare them to, and very few people who are experts on it. Here's hoping you find the time to take a look sometime, as I'm clueless as to the origins of most of the new additions.

sigh ok this is my last attempt to get just ONE helpful reply from here. I just went back through the archives and managed to find another 30 or so games by using reverse image search and cropping images, but I believe that means all the ones left need to be identified by eye now. I really need some help getting these, so please please PLEASe have a look. With so many gamers of so many kinds here, at least one person must be able to identify one!
Would it be a better idea if I just posted one of the unknown one's every day or so? So everyone could try and work out what a single one is, rather than the somewhat huge list of one's i linked to?

I think the issue is that most folks here probably either aren't interested or are too busy to do something like this. Bumping the thread and complaining won't really help you attain your goals, I'm sorry to say.

You can lock it if you don't think there's gonna be any activity anymore.

I don't honestly see a reason to lock the thread. If someone becomes interested in it, they'll post in it, I'm sure.

Yeah, just give people time. I've been meaning to take a look at this, but if you're down to 30 images that you can't even find by reverse image searching, I'm not sure I can identify them either.

Ah ok, sorry, I just thought I may have been annoying people. If that's not the case, then phew. Good news and bad news Snarboo. The list hasn't been narrowed down TO 30; it's been narrowed down BY 30. Which mean's there's a whole bunch more left to get. So A. That's considerably higher chances that there are some you may recognise, but B. That's a whole bunch more that google image search didn't recognise. (Mind you image search can be 'eh' at times, as I've discovered doing this). Who know's, seeing as they took pictures from this site, you may even see pictures taken from articles you worked on

I don't play anything really obscure, but I'll try I'm having a hell of a time trying to reverse look up which ones you need....

I took a look, but when I saw that it's just a plain text list of links, I really couldn't be bothered. They're not even clickable links, and I sure as hell am not about to copy and paste links endlessly. If it was a page where all the images would load up, then I'd be happy to glance through.
