The Ogre Battle/Tactics Ogre, Dragon Slayer and the Tower of Druaga games have shifted genres dramatically too. Dragon Slayer only loosely qualifies as a series, and while the other two did indeed shift, I'm not really sure it was quite as dramatic a shift as a vertical-scrolling shmup --> a Metroidvania --> a puzzle RPG. -Tom

As dramatic as that no. But I think Ogre Battle -> Tactics Ogre was dramatic and the Druaga series are quite different too.

Also: Persona 4, Arena, Dancing All Night? Those are spin-offs. Every big series has spin-offs... but not every big series has main, numbered entries that shift genres completely. It's a pretty nebulous claim on my part, to be sure, but the specific way in which that series progressed just feels really unique to me. -Tom

There's Guilty Gear 2: Overture, the RTS nominal sequel to Guilty Gear.

La-Mulana 2 was finally released yesterday. I have backed it so I received a key. I don't think I'm going to tackle it right now, though... Just asking if the person who wrote the game article is still around to write about the sequel too.

Just asking if the person who wrote the game article is still around to write about the sequel too. I'll have to ask. He's contributed stuff relatively recently (he did the Last Armageddon piece from a few months back) but I'm not sure if he's playing this one. I backed it too but I haven't had a chance to play it yet.

If you still plan to have someone write an article on the sequel, there's this interesting topic on Steam forums that details how every single shopkeeper in the Eg-Lana ruins is a reference to something. They're mostly based on MSX games, of course, but there are some oddities like One Punch Man, Bad Box Art Megaman and the protagonist of the ancient Atari 2600 game H.E.R.O.

Oh finally our man came back and wrote an article about the sequel too! It's an interesting read, however it doesn't actually make me want to pick up the game again for the moment, since I don't like knowing how most puzzles are based on those damn mantras, the fact that most items never really have an use outside of the specific point where they are needed, and the fact that the inventory is mostly the same as the previous game. Speaking of recycling, another thing (not said in the article) that annoyed me is that the enemy descriptions say that some monsters in La-Mulana were imperfect copies of those from Eg-Lana, a really cheap excuse to recycle old sprites. Nothing too wrong with that, but since it took three years instead of one to release the game, they could at least have worked a little more on that. The character portraits are beautiful, though. (Those fairies... and Mulbruk...) Can't say too much about the rest since I haven't seen everything, I'm stuck since it's just too difficult for me and I'm kinda regretting of having backed it. Also where are those goddamn keys for the optional clothes? I paid for them, dammit!
