Note for clarity: I do not speak Japanese, so I'll need plenty of dumb luck to find anything specific. I'll have fun trawling through anime and toy shops looking though.
Your wife's Taiwanese right? A lot of US flights to Taipei transit Narita, so it's generally cost-effective to go for the double if you've got the time. My advice is don't hang around Tokyo too long though. Place is a money pit. At least the exchange rate's swung back somewhat more in our favor again.

so has the ship kinda sailed on this for most stuff? for instance, i was hearing about $30 dreamcast broadband adapters; even if that was double through a proxy service it'd still be a great deal, but im not seeing that lately.

It depends on what you're getting. Retro games are getting more and more expensive - it seems like people are poaching them to sell on Ebay :/. On the other hand, I've gotten some really good deals on doujinshi and comics off of YAJ...too bad the shipping kills it. Still, cheaper than ebay or most "import" stores!

If you can swing it, you can find all sorts of stuff if you go straight to the source and travel to Japan. No promises on Radiant Silvergun, but I wouldn't rule it out.

I'll second this, I've gotten some really good stuff this way - only issue is that you're going in "blind" compared to stuff on YAJ, and you're bound to get lemons sometimes. Case in point: I got that gamebook I mentioned from Amazon Marketplace and it's in decidedly less "good condition" than the seller let on. On the other hand I got some artbooks I've been searching 10 years for at a low price, and for near-mint copies.

sounds like a good resource...and yeah i figured silvergun is likely always kinda baller, is there any real chance at a good price on a DC BBA though? id love to find it for sub $100 but that seems impossible on ebay/etc domestically.

Count on at least $25 on forwarding/EMS shipment fees. You can also order the same thing through Rakuten, which will ship directly overseas instead of going through a package forwarder. But, they tend to take a long time to even acknowledge your order, and given the pricing, it might actually be a little more expensive, just less of a hassle. item.rakuten.co.jp/surugaya-a-too/144926-1/As for compatability, I'm not really sure.

Oh, Rakuten looks like it might be a good option for a few import games I've been looking at, but haven't been willing to pay inflated ebay prices.

To what I understand, ordering with a proxy service is asininely expensive (and required if you live outside of Japan.) I don't have any experience in doing it myself, but one of my 2 best friends has done it a few times. It's good because you can get games for absolutely dirt cheap, particularly rare ones. Unless you live in Japan, you're going to want to use it only for games that are already uber expensive. In my knowledge, my friend has purchased LSD Dream Emulator, and a CiB copy of Ganbare Goemon: Hoshizorashi Dynamites Arawaru (probably the rarest game in the series, I'm lucky to own just the cart.) I can't remember what he paid for when he bought LSD Dream Emulator, but I know he won Goemon for $6 USD plus a ton of shipping due to proxy services.

Kurt, do they still only take credit card? That was one reason I didn't use Rakuten in the past. Speaking of which, Paypal can eat shit for their adult policy. On the bright side I had no issues using my CC on Amazon Marketplace when I bought a ton of Rance games recently, whereas I had no luck doing the same with Rakutem/Suruga-ya.
