I do have to question the rationale for the computer ports, which couldn't replicate the scaling (though the Amiga/Atari ST versions sure try) and didn't have any light guns. The SMS conversion is a totally different game.

The SMS conversion is a totally different game. Its a cheap way to play your favorite arcade game at home. Or at very least, cheap way to play something that kind of reminds you of your favorite arcade game. Commodore 64 does have a lightgun though, but I have no idea what games you can play with it.
