Whoa, whoa, whoa! You guys haven't heard ALL OVER XANADU? That album is a legendary part of gaming history over here. Give it a listen and dance to it when you do chores around the house, next time. Chores will get so much better. They'll glitter like sparkly vampires. That wasn't the only gaming album that was huge in our house. The Mother arranged album was gigantic as well, especially Pollyanna and Eight Melodies, which are great children's songs. I've also heard the Falcom Vocal Collection more times than I can count. Of course they don't play this on the radio though. I have heard Eyes on Me, 1000 Words, Karma and the vocal theme to Final Fantasy Chronicles: Rings of Fate played on the radio before, but I hardly think that counts as the same thing since they are after all, normal pop songs. Did you guys know there's an m-flo song that uses the sound effects to original Pole Position as a beat? |

Ha that just pulls up Electric Lights Orchestra and that one movie. Named Xanadu. It's a pity though. I always secretly hoped Mitsuda was a radio mainstay there. The same way Clapton is here.

More recently, there's also a Nakatsuka Takeshi rap song that makes prominent use of the theme from Namco's "Rally-X." I uploaded it to YouTube, but it's blocked in Japan. That certainly wasn't all the music my parents had running around the house. I distinctly remember Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Mr. Children and YMO and all sorts of more well-known music. All Over Xanadu is apparently the best-selling game music album ever too. And American music makers incorporate video game music into their stuff as well. (Wiz Khalifa sampled Chrono Trigger for one of his songs, for instance.) I mean sure there's a small section for game music at retailers, but it's not like it burns up the charts here either. |

It's a bit more available now. (Well, a lot more available if you count internet piracy.) But 20 years ago? Forget about it. The first time I saw a Final Fantasy soundtrack album was probably the mid-90s. Imported of course. My mind was blown. Even now, game music's not the sort of thing you can go to most normal music stores and buy. Pretty much need to go to mom and pop game stores, or anime shops. |

Ha ha! A classic! Who were Buckner & Garcia anywhere? They sound like ice cream makers or hick lawyers from Tennessee. Were they like the Macklemore and Ryan Lewis of their generation?
Actually, there's this Rip Slyme song that I'm pretty sure samples a Gameboy game, or at least something that sounds like Famicom or Amiga-like. Knowing how they snuck Gradius references into Super Shooter, I'm sure it's possible. Maybe if I posted it, people here would be able to figure out if such was the case?

They only released one album of all video game related songs in the early 80s. Pac-Man Fever reached #9 on the charts though. Post the other one though, someone is bound to know it. |

Doesn't it sound like it's sampled from a snippet of an old game's soundtrack?
Now that I think about it, Gradius isn't the only nod they made. Here's a track off of their mid-2000s, Epoch, where they provide a loving tribute to Namco's arcade classic, Dig Dug:
This was back when Mr. Driller was still a really popular puzzle and arcade series. You have to know the lyrics to get the tribute, but let's just say some people interpret the song as being very, very dirty and it's so raunchy (or at least can be interpreted that way) I'm not sure I'm allowed to translate them on this forum without putting huge red flashing NSFW beacons around it.
