I haven't spent much time with the PC Engine's library, except what my cousins owned, so from that limited spread I have to go with Dragon Spirit.

I'm a fan of the CD version of Valis III's soundtrack, but still like the Megadrive version best I guess.

There's a music forum for this Can you please move it? Done! As for my favorites, I was almost going to say Dracula X, but given that it's a CD game, that wouldn't be fair to all those HuCard releases. Probably my favorite HuCard-based soundtrack is Blazing Lazers, though.

Devil's Crash. I'm a big sucker for the Genesis's soundchip, but even though it was ported for SEGA's console (by Technosoft, the masters of FM hard-rock, no less!), I have to give Compile the props for making the original PCE version sound superior in each and every way. I especially like how the main table song keeps playing even after you lose a ball in the PCE version, which makes listening to its awesome "encore" section not a matter of survival, as it is in the Genesis version.

Honorable (??) mention: Final Zone II (especially US version)

Devil's Crush and Metal Stoker are probably my overall favorites. I like the Hudson/Red shmup soundtracks the most though. Air Zonk, Coryoon, almost all of the good shumps on the system have really great soundtracks too. I like how uniquely slow but aggressive Pyscho Chaser's is for the time though. Also I love almost all of the tracks in Bloody Wolf. I respect its audacity, it's reminiscent of games like Belmont's Revenge on the original Game Boy or S.A.R. in the arcades in that you can tell the developers were like "We don't care how limited the soundtrack is, we're making a Black Sabbath/Dio album on this thing." I can't really think of another PC Engine game that sounds quite like it either, Data East did similarly unique work on the Genesis, with a really good sound library that they sadly only used on I think Chelnov, Vapor Trail and The Hybrid Front. Legendary Axe is an interesting one because it's kind of weak on a technical level even for early PC Engine, but it's definitely one of the catchiest soundtracks ever made on any system, I love it. Some of my favorites: Devil's Crush www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHCCoNyNFtYMetal Stoker (Face's best game, love the music in this because there's a LOT of it for a PC Engine shump and it's all catchy) www.youtube.com/watch?v=vy_KdUs0eNcBloody Wolf (I love this game so much ) www.youtube.com/watch?v=Td9bTyDwI00&index=10&list=PL562380BD841A551Cwww.youtube.com/watch?v=4xSTnj_iwEs&index=9&list=PL562380BD841A551Cwww.youtube.com/watch?v=gZp3EcHUSsQ&list=PL562380BD841A551C&index=8www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZH2fzv7_gY&list=PL562380BD841A551C&index=3www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FmWLwl-agA&list=PL562380BD841A551C&index=5Psycho Chaser (Sting's first game, I wish they did more atmospheric shmups before going to just RPGs) www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlcmpdD-6Hk&index=3&list=PL6E4F51703B6880A1Soldier Blade (This track really stands out among a great soundtrack in general) www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Lzbf_gErkA

Data East did similarly unique work on the Genesis, with a really good sound library that they sadly only used on I think Chelnov, Vapor Trail and The Hybrid Front. Since this thread was bumped...that's the Terpsichorean sound driver, developed by Hitoshi Sakimoto, he of Final Fantasy Tactics and lots of other awesome soundtracks fame. It was mostly used in Data East games, like Midnight Resistance, Two Crude Dudes, and Captain America and the Avengers (which sound better than their arcade counterparts), along with other random titles like Gauntlet IV, Master of Monsters, Verytex and Devilish (Genesis) and Shippu Mahou Daisakusen (arcade/Saturn). The Hybrid Front was done by the Sega folks, one of the main composers was Naofumi Hataya who did a ton of other great work on the Genesis, like Sonic 3, Golden Axe II, and other later Sonic Team stuff like the NiGHTs games. Really flavorful soundtrack for a Nectaris-type games.

Yeah, The Hybrid Front's soundtrack has a really unique, special sound to it, and it's great to boot (so much, in fact, that many of its tracks are used in the legendary Sonic ROMhack/fangame Sonic Megamix ever since the early versions). Does the game use a special driver, too?
And I freaking LOVE Hitoshi Sakimoto's work on FM synth! Up to this day Shippu Mahou Daisakusen/Kingdom Grandprix's is one of my favorite shmup soundtracks of all time. Damn, that intro... It must have really stood out in the noisy arcades of the 90s!
