Hello, everyone. I'm curious to see if any of the HG101 denizens speed run any games, have in the past, or plan to do so in the future. I'm including any sort here, be it (single-)segmented, TAS, or anything in between. If you do, what games do you run? How'd you decide to run whatever game(s) you do? Have you found it to be a worthwhile experience? If you don't, do you keep up with the speed running community, or follow stuff like A/SGDQ? I've long considered "learning" a game for running, though I've always struggled in picking one game to pour this kind of time into, and I always feel like I should spend the time instead on getting through my backlog, though I feel like it's something I could really get into. The closest I've come is learning an ok-ish 16 star route in SM64, though I've considered running a Kirby game. If you've managed to avoid ever watching a speed run, here's the current non-TAS world record any% run of OoT to give you a taste: www.youtube.com/watch?v=aq6pGJbd6Iw&list=UUAhuwIvlcSpjlrJALruursQWhat're your thoughts on speed running?

I don't do it frequently, but I do occasionally employ speed running tricks in regular gameplay, even if I'm not shooting for a best time. My proudest speed-related accomplishment is probably unlocking Captain Falcon in the original Smash Bros, because I recall you had to finish the game in less than seven minutes or something similarly absurd (at the time, to 12-year-old me).

I like to watch speed running videos and have watched quite Games Done Quickly runs. I find it all incredibly impressive at times, but I just don't have the time to do something myself.

I don't do it. But I enjoy stuff like the morrowind speedruns wich finish this immense game through sequence breaking in minutes. Doesn't make it a lesser game to me, but it is funny that when you play the game like you want to, like exploring, seeing everything there is,doing quests, it takes AGES, but you THEORETICALLY can go to the ending sequence in mere minutes..........

I play through my games once and never again, so I could never speedrun any of them cause I simply don't know the ins and outs of them. Back in the day I used to replay NES games over and over so my best bet would be something like Duck Tales, Kirby's Dreamland, The Little Mermaid or Rescue Rangers. Those are over in 5-10 minutes which is all my brain could stomach. I am MIGHTY impressed by people speedrunning Zelda games and stuff. I might be able to speedrun a Castlevania game sometime but I'm sure I would be much slower than most speedrunners out there. I like to take my time with games. No stress!

I've never seriously tried it, but I enjoy watching speedrun videos from time to time, and appreciate the effort that goes into both real-time runs and TAS runs. I especially like seeing how people manage to circumvent large portions of major games like Super Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time, and end up finishing the game in minutes

My favorite ones to watch are Castlevania and Mega Man speed runs. Since I replay these games more often than others I like to see the ways that other people play them and also pick up some new techniques.

Not really my cup of tea, but I can recognize that it appeals to some people. Not everyone plays for story, for example, but that's the main appeal of most games in my eyes.
