There were a lot of GTA clones during the 2000s. I'm gonna go with that so hopefully we can get something goofy like True Crime: Streets of LA. :V

As you can see, the game for this month is Marc Ecko's Getting Up, which can be purchased on Steam here!

I started playing it years ago on PS2, never got past the first part though (got distracted). From what I remember it was pretty decent, though. What's funny is that IIRC there were cameos from real taggers and one of them was Sheppard Farey, the Obama "Hope" poster guy.

Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure is a story of a heroic youth who strives to free the opressed masses through his profound, thoughtful imagery. EDIT: "Why they hatin' on me?" Trane asked, as he continued to beat up every single rival gang member that crossed his path, while he continued to paint rude things over all their graffiti.

Great. I actually happen to have this on PS2. I asked my sister one day to buy me a random PS2 game. "Surprise me" I said and she brought this. Played it for about half an hour and came to the conclusion that I'm not urban and opressed enough to play this.

Here's an amusing clip from a Giant Bomb interview with the Penny Arcade guys where they discuss Marc Ecko and Getting Up:

That's pretty much one of the things Atari made a huge deal out of back then, how they got all these real graffiti artists and their art in the game and whatnot... which wasn't really special considering they had already gotten a few of them before for that godawful retro compilation they released on DS (Retro Atari Classics), that one with the "remix" versions which were really just hit-and-miss visually (there were a few that were nearly the same as the original versions, from what I can recall), and the actual conversions of the games were not good (Warlords in particular only ever having exactly one fireball throughout the entire game, making it super easier) As for Getting Up itself, I used to have it on PS2 several years ago (around 2007 or so; an old buddy had lent it to us) and from what I can barely recall it wasn't too bad, honest, although as it was common with games back then there were a few forced stealth sections. I also recall messing around with the versus mode (I can't recall if it was 2-player only or if it also had a vs. CPU mode, tho) and the pretty good soundtrack... and the somewhat blatant product placement for ye olde iPods. What I didn't recall was the cast, tho. Mostly the fact that Andy Dick voices one of the characters. 2005, man. Bobinator - ...I certainly didn't recall that. I should see if I can import that to Jet Set Radio.

Oh wow, I have Marc Ecko's Getting Up on Steam for one very specific reason and that's I'm fascinated by media that's a reaction against the George W Bush era, everything from movies like V For Vendetta and Children of Men to anime like Eureka 7 and Fullmetal Alchemist to the Nine Inch Nails album Year Zero.
Marc Ecko's Getting Up is off the top of my head the most blatant example of that in video games.
I guess I should finally play it soon huh?

I think it's just as applicable now if not moreso considering what the NSA's been doing (although that did start in the Bush administration), malfeasance by state and local government officials, and police "over-responses" we've been seeing over the past few years.

Sort of. But the advent of Edward Snowden made the tone shift more to things like Watch_Dogs and its blatant TV show ripoff "Mr. Robot". Less Urban, more 4chan.

That's a good point, "hacktivism" as the news likes to call it. I guess I wanted to see if anyone's actually playing this. I played a couple hours back in like 2006 or 2007, I remember getting this on Black Friday at Circuit City. Currently I've only made it past the tutorial. For something that costs $14.99 the PC version on steam is incredibly lazy, it's obvious they just slapped something together to get it up and running and threw in the widescreen deal. It was a bitch trying to figure out what button on the control pad corresponded with what, since the tutorial references the keyboard, too. I guess that and the fact that Bloodborne's out (and Shovel Knight, and Umihara Kawase, and Fantasy Zone 2, and...) has made me less than enthused to play this. Oh, and reports that half the game is forced stealth shit.

I played the PS2 copy that I picked up for $7. I made it to the meat packing plant in chapter 3 and just got totally tired of it. The main problem is that brawls take way too long and are just frustrating to play. Granted, some are probably meant to be avoided by stealth, but that's hit and miss. At least in the room I was in, the guy would immediately tackle me if I tried to run, so getting back in stealth mode wasn't happening.

Yeah the enemies guard too much and it got tedious fighting them.

Let's not forget that the game is made by the same people who would go on to make my most hated game of all time, Silent Hill Homecoming.
While I'm sure the game is not that bad we're clearly not dealing with genius developers here.

The stealth wouldn't be anywhere near as bad as it is IF the dedicated stealth takedown worked more than 50% of the time. For whatever reason, the game is really picky about it. Often you'll try to knock the guy out, only for Trane to kick them in the back instead, alerting them. It's especially annoying if you're dealing with the security forces, who can call for backup.
As it stands, it's better to play this like Arkham and either pick guys off one at a time, or get into a large brawl and hope for the best.
