Streets of Rage 2 4 eva. <3 That game blew my mind the very first time I played it as a child, and I still love it. I love the music and stages. One of my favorites is the one that references Alien. Seconded. I know that there are more fleshed out beat em ups gameplay-wise, but SoR2 just feels so good to play and it's so well balanced that it doesn't matter. Oh,and there is the Punisher coin-op,which is one of many reasons why I think the Kingpin is the greatest Marvel villain ever. Knight Of The Rounds is also good but I'm still baffled by Capcom's choice to name the final boss after a very important figure of Italy's XIX century history ...

In terms of gameplay, I'm with you. SOR2 is awesome. But in terms of stages - not the level design, but the setting - I much much much prefer SOR1. The over the top stuff of SOR2 is decidedly 90s, whereas SOR1 still feels super 80s to me. I just prefer the latter.

The top HG101 beat-em-ups, as featured in an upcoming project that has yet to be officially announced, are:
Streets of Rage 2 Alien vs. Predator (Capcom, obviously) Double Dragon Advance Violent Storm Guardian Heroes

It makes me mad that X-Men has only one vote. It's my favorite one.

Don't toy with my feeling on this subject matter! Also, as far as "best" lists go (as opposed to "favourite"), I'd say yours is a good one either way - it's missing Revenge Of Death Adder, though. Nowhere near my personal favourite, but so damn solid.

Well, Streets of Rage 2 seems poised to take the gold, that much is sure. I was right on that one at least, yay. Considering I used Final Fight as a portmanteau for Capcom games, I have number two as well. I thought the nostalgia goggles would be stronger regarding TMNT, but wiser choices have prevailed.

Don't toy with my feeling on this subject matter! It's more like the staff picks. This particular project is not focused specifically on beat-em-ups, though we've started work on something like that for the future. Really, it's mostly just getting a Double Dragon article in order!

What makes the Mad Stalker titles mediocre, especially to experts like the HG101 Staff? Kind of basic gameplay and lack of content? Even after former Treasure designer Tetsuhiko "Han" Kikuchi used that and Alien VS. Predator to create Guardian Heroes according to his interview in one of the last Nintendo Power magazines?

I don't recall anyone stating these games were mediocre, particluarly from the staff. It's not ingrained in people's memories as the top of the best, that's all. I don't think anyone has to justify their tastes to anyone here, even if a dude said a thing in Nintendo Power. Secondly, being a source of inspiration for something great doesn't mean the inspiration is good or bad. Easy, tiger, it's an informal poll, you cannot change what people think. Then again, please dismiss me, for I am no staff.

It's also a belt scroller, which might have circumvented its inclusion into a list of the best beat 'em ups. Really, it's mostly just getting a Double Dragon article in order! Awesome enough for me!

It makes me mad that X-Men has only one vote. It's my favorite one. Yeah, I just played X-Men again last night. Not emulation, an actual machine. With 6 players. It was the raddest. It feels a bit unpolished and cheap, but a 6 player beat 'em up is a really good time. Then I got a wrist cramp because arcade cabinets are not designed for someone 6'1". #thestruggle I also really, REALLY liked Golden Axe. I mean I was obsessed with it as a kid. I guess it's because I'm drawn toward sword and sorcery settings, but I also thought the magic system was cool as hell.

I just realized I have given only four names in my top five. So here is the last: good old Final Fight. I know there were innumerable better Capcom beat'em ups, but I simply always loved this game. For me, it was the killer app of the new SNES at the time. I was floored by how close the graphics were to the arcade game, and did not mind about Guy's absence. I still re-bought it on XBLA, and also the GBA versiom, with its super cool Coday and Guy sprites taken from the Street Fighter alpha series. I love this game. I love the graphisms, I like the music, I love the crowd control moves.. it just does it for me.
So there. My top five is complete.

1 FINAL FIGHT . arcade This one remains the definitive classic urban brawler for me. Capcom impressed me from the beginning for delivering a truly solid gameplay on this one, like nothing i`d seem before. 2 HOKUTO NO KEN 2 . mega drive The Hokuto games series was really poor, in general, but i liked this game from the beginning - even before i knew what HnK was. This game has a special aura of mystery and sadness, features sheer gory violence and is also very faithful to the original anime it was based on! Backgrounds and gameplay wise, i may agree it could be a little better (maybe Ken could be faster when walking), but overall, it`s more than nice for me, i love the work Sega did on the characters design and the songs. Just like Final Fight, i`ve being playing it for over 24 years now, and i don`t feel like stopping. 3 ALIEN vs PREDATOR . arcade You got Predators (TWO of them!) on a battle against Aliens in beatemup style. Simple as that, it`s the Alien x Predator universe with the good old Final Fight approach, so if you love both, how you couldn`t love this game? If this game could ever have a flaw, it`is the fact it never received a console port. ______________________ Honorable mentions: Kung Fu Master . nes - I prefer this one to the original, i think its gameplay is less clumsy. Also, it can be finished very fast, the overall pace is quite good. Double Dragon . arcade or nes - Though the original remains a landmark for the genre, i think it`s incredibly fun to punch the enemies` faces with a turbo powered controller on the Nes! Renegade / Kunio Kun . nes or master system - Both versions are great (and, not surprisingly, way way more playable than the original), and i like the fact that the Nes and Famicom versions have different visual styles. This game also turns greatly enjoyable when played the same way i described above for the Nes` DOuble Dragon Super Double Dragon . snes Combatribes . snes - Little bit different from the original version, but featuring some extra pros (particularly, the vs mode) Streets of Rage 2 . mega drive Rushing Beat 1 and 2 . snes Captain Commando, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs... Pretty much every 2d beatemup Capcom made feels like fun and quality for me.

Unbelievably cool video! Why didn't they release it? I would have spent so much money on the arcade version! Don't know how you heard about it, but great job! For those who don't click: it's avideo of an unreleased prototype for Spartan-X (Kung Fu Master) 2!!! Shoot, it seems so cool! They made a great mistake not releasing it. Thanx for the video!
