Well this is a surprise. Square just announced a new Star Ocean game for PS3 and PS4. Supposedly, it's currently around 30% complete at this point. It's good to hear that the series is still alive after the concerns over Tri-Ace recently. Still, you have to wonder just how good this will be, considering it's going to be limited by last-gen hardware specs, and that SOIII and IV were such huge disappointments.

At this point, I'd rather S-E just work out an agreement with Sony to whitelist the two PSP games on PSN so they can be played on the Vita...

It's possible they're some of the games that can be used to hack the Vita. I went looking into the process a while back, and supposedly a bunch of seemingly innocuous PSP titles were removed from PSN because they allowed unsigned code to be run on Vita.

I hope that it's going to be far better than the last one. I was left feeling kind of cold by Last Hope because it didn't feel like a complete SO experience to me.
I'm really hoping that there will be a much larger cast of playable characters too. I miss being able to pick and choose who I want to recruit as the story progresses like in the earlier games, because it let me mix party members around and have more fun with the variety that way and didn't make the experience feel completely alike every time.
Last Hope was extremely disappointing in that regard, having only one recruitable character and only with clear save data present, and even then the switch was of no consequence to the story whatsoever. So I'm hoping they return to the roots.

Wait not free to play or a mobile game? I didn't care much for III or IV either, but it is cool that Square is taking another chance on the series.

I'm a little hurt that what was through and through an Enix-owned series getting referred to as just "Square".
Sort of.
Not really.
But Enix is still getting Rodney Dangerfield-ed.

Considering that the only pre-merger Star Ocean released over here was Second Story sixteen years ago most people probably do not remember that Enix initially published the series. Hell I forget Valkyrie Profile was first published by Enix. Does that really matter though? Enix is just a publisher. tri-Ace is the important name to know.
I figure most people are just too lazy to write out Square Enix. Squenix?

I don't know, I think I'm still bitter that even though Enix had to bail out Square, people still think of it as just Square because Final Fantasy.

I am one of those people who actually liked SO3 quite a bit. It was my first SO so that may have something to do with it, but I still like it. Went back to play the PSP remakes of 1 & 2 and found the first one to be a bit bland tbh. The second one felt much better though.
As for The Last Hope, it was just... lifeless and boring. It just did not feel as epic as it should've, being an "OMG SPACE OPERA!!" and all. The battle system was the only thing I liked but even fighting got old after a while.
My expectations for SO5 are very low right now. I think Xenoblade Chronicles X is the game to beat here, and while I have my reservations for that one as well, at least it looks impossibly epic and grand. That is what SO should be. I'll believe it when I see it,
I miss Phantasy Star btw. The original series, mind you.
Sincerely, Old guy

I very much loved the remake of the first game, myself. Loved it to death, not as much as SO2, but very, very close. I would love to revisit it soon, in fact. Although I will admit that the story in 1 is weak. I try not to focus on that, though, and more on the gameplay, which I enjoyed as much as SO2's.
I have yet to try the original SNES version of 1, though. I keep reminding myself to try it someday and I never get around to it.

Let's hope that whoever writes the story and dialogue isn't wildly incompetent this time.

I wonder when they're going to base it? Or if they're just going to say that Til the End of Time was stupid.

If you mean my initial post as an example of that, it's just due to a weird hang up I have about these two merged companies. I refuse to always say "Square-Enix" when referring to their current state, as if they're some kind of married woman in the 90s who insists on using their hyphenated maiden name. Just pick a name and stick with it, I say.

I still say just Namco. Same with Tecmo. But I tend to say Squenix, which sounds stupid but I value both old companies equally and am too lazy to pronounce/write both. I don't care about Bandai or KOEI though, or rather - I have very poor knowledge of what they did before the respective merger.

Bandai has always been a purveyor of shitty anime merchandise in my eyes, so it's not much of a problem to ignore their continued existence as part of that merger. The loss of Koei's unique identity hurts a bit more, but what have they really done other than endless Dynasty Warriors games since 2000? God, I miss their historical simulation series.
