I like GiantRobot's suggestion of Xtreme Sports, myself.

I would suggest the GBA games (ie Golf Advance Tour and Power Tennis Tour) over the GBC ones since you already have covered a few Game Boy games on GC9X, the last being only 3 months old. And as you said, it's an odd fit, especially since Camelot is mostly known for Golden Sun and Shining Force.

It's a tight race between Sports RPGs and 3D Fighters, but I'm going to put my money on former for now. What are some good Sports RPGs you guys would recommend? Succubus has suggested the Mario Tennis games for GBC/GBA, and I'm leaning towards that because it seems like an odd fit for the Mario franchise. There's that Captain Tsubasa game they translated, it's kind of like L-Man or that Yu Yu Hakusho game. Another one I want to play is Battle Golfer Yui, on account of the hentais.

Is there any game you wouldn't play for the hentais? :p Edit:There's that Captain Tsubasa game they translated, it's kind of like L-Man or that Yu Yu Hakusho game. That sounds like it could be fun! Also reminds me that I need to start working on that L-Man article. It's only 2 or 3 years late. D:

Oh man oh man.
Oh man OH MAN.
On the subject of obscure 3D fighters, check out what's on the HG101 frontpage!
Games like Masters of Teras Kasi fill me with such a unique mix of nostalgia and "FUCK THE '90s".

I would like to stress once more that that was the first PS1 game I ever owned, so I can't hate it that much. On the other hand, it's really... kind of questionable, yes. Seriously, though, that game is amazing when you're 7, and your fighting game experience is nothing but the SNES versions of Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2.

I have a similar opinion about Battle Arena Toshinden.

Just as a quick note, even if your genre or game of choice doesn't make it, don't be afraid to post about the genre of the month anyway! We'd love to hear what you have to say, as I know next to nothing about Sports RPGs. :p
Also, a quick question: would anyone want to see a potential list of genres for the next month towards the end of this one? I can't promise anything, but I'm curious if there are genres that would interest you guys.

I think that would work Snarboo. Maybe even examples within the genre as well? As for 3-D fighters, I would also nominate Star Wars as I have a funny/interesting story for it that I'll post a little later when I have a moment.

Well, I'm not sure if the genre is going to win although it is currently the front runner, being an avid sports gamer myself I actually have at least a little bit to say about sports RPGs, well, sports games in general and how they relate to RPGs. The interesting part about sports RPGs is that most sports games, in general, have RPG elements and this has been true pretty much ever since sports games have introduced franchise mode (i.e. playing through multiple seasons with the same team). Some sort of franchise mode existed with sports games ever since the early 90's on PC but I think the earliest incarnations of franchise mode I can think of on consoles occurred with the release of Madden 99? Maybe one of the NFL Gameday games introduced franchise mode on consoles before that? Maybe I'm not thinking of a game, I don't know. Anyway, the point is games with franchise mode had to make it so rookies improved and older players (or players who didn't play too often) got worse and a lot of that was based on how often they played, how well they played (mostly based on stats like touchdowns scored, homeruns hit, etc) and how often they played. Think of it as experience points with stat bonuses for how well a player played in the game. Now, whether experience points franchise mode has been implemented well in sports games, well, is a subject for debate and really varies based on what series of sports games you are talking about, but RPG elements have existed in games for quite awhile.
Additionally, you can find career modes in most modern sports games and that's where the RPG elements are much more prominent. While career modes do vary between the various sports games and franchises and can vary in drastic (and not so drastic) ways from year-to-year, the core of every career mode is essentially the same. Train either by assigning tasks to a player via text or via mini-game. Play the sporting event. Gain experience points for doing well. In some games, get stat bonuses for performing specific tasks (i.e. getting bonuses to hitting power if your player hits a homerun). Divvy experience points among your various stats. Rinse and repeat until you've completed the player's career. Like I said, there's some variance, but that's the gist of most career modes. There are even stats you could consider dump stats in most sports career modes (i.e. who cares about bunting if I'm a power hitting first baseman).
As far as sports games with a story, there have been woefully few released in the United States outside of pro wrestling games. The first game I remember being released in the states that had story/RPG elements in a sports game was Tecmo Cup Soccer, which I later learned was the US version of Captain Tsubasa. Then, there was a dearth of sports games with any sort of story until maybe the Mario Golf/Tennis games? Even then, there hasn't been a whole lot of them released.
In fact, the only notable ones I can think of are Blitz: The League and Blitz: The League II, both having RPG elements where players were given XP mostly through training, though using performance enhancing drugs was possible but surprisingly wasn't as effective as training as PEDs only provided temporary boosts and made players more susceptible to injuries. Others I can remember are NBA Ballers, NBA 06-09, and I believe the latest NBA 2K game has a story with its career mode.
Of course, I would be remiss if I failed to mention MLB Power Pros and MLB Power Pros 2008. Both games are part of the Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū series of games, a series of baseball games widely popular in Japan but mostly unheard of in the states. As I understand, the Power Pros games were actually versions of the Jikkyō Powerful Major League games, with MLB Power Pros actually being Jikkyō Powerful Major League 2. Anyway, both MLB Power Pros and Power Pros 2008 had what is known as Success Mode, which is basically the game's story mode. In both games, the story was about an emerging baseball player (the first game the player was in college, the second the player was a minor leaguer) trying to impress scouts and go to the next level of his career. You'd level up your character in various ways, mostly through training and playing well in baseball games, but sometimes through dialogue and choices made, items purchased, etc. The Success Mode was probably closest to what most people would think of as an RPG. Power Pros 2008 also had a career mode called MLB Life which wasn't as story driven as the Success Mode but still more story driven than most sports games.
Anyway, I've rambled way too long. I hope somebody found this interesting.
Anyway, tl;dr version: most sports games have RPG elements these days. Very few sports games have stories, though. MLB Power Pros and Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū in general are awesome games.

Voting has ended, and the polls were in favor of 3-D fighting games at 10:30! However, do note that we received some votes after it had formally ended but hadn't quite pulled 'er yet. There's still a chance to get your two cents in, though! What 3-D fighters would you all be interested in playing? Drop us a line within the next day and let us know!

Really thought this was going to end up with sports RPGs. Interesting. How about Final Fight Revenge? Or would that be too much for people who prefer to play these things with legit copies?

If we're taking price into account, Tobal No 1, Ergheiz, and Evil Zone are all pretty cheap on Amazon. I think the most expensive is Evil Zone, at ~$40 for a brand new copy.
Edit: Bushido Blade isn't too bad either, but its sequel is quite a bit more expensive. There's also Zero Divide, the PC port of which is super cheap at ~$5.
Edit 2: Whoops, forgot to say which of these I prefer! I'm leaning towards Evil Zone and Tobal No 1 at the moment, given how unusual they are within the pantheon of 3D fighting games.

Huh, that's surprising. I think I checked the poll like 5 minutes past the end time, and sports RPGs had the lead then. I guess people got desperate to turn the tide, haha.
I'm still down for some Toshinden, haha. I already own 1-3 (and the Game Boy game, for that matter, which is the only one I've played to any great extent). At the very least, the series has some ace tunes (I've got the OST for 2 also). If you guys really wanna torture me, you could force me to finally play my copy of Castlevania Judgment, haha. But I think I'm feeling more in the mood for some chunky PS1 fighter (please nothing on N64; almost all of them wretched).
Wait, would something like Custom Robo count? I've already played the first N64 game and it's a lot of fun. I could use an excuse to play the GameCube one (and the second N64 one, but that's Japanese-only).
Maybe I'm naming some stuff that's too modern here, though, if you guys want stuff that could be emulated fairly easily.

Toshinden might be a good choice. I remember them getting a lot of coverage in the early days of the PS1, but quickly falling out of favor after NAMCO started cranking out Tekken and its sequels. Then again, more unusual fare like Evil Zone and Tobal might work, as well.
Hell, given how short most fighters are, we could conceivably cover quite a few of them at once.
