Impressive tattoo, even though the naughty demon on the lower left corner made me giggle. I mean, notice the placement of his hand! That Icon of Sin statue is awesome, I actually said "wow!" when I saw it! Simply brilliant. Oh, and I have edited my previous post with the correct titles, so I hope I won't be banned

Hehee it's so perfect. Speaking of perfect, what are some people's absolute favorite .WADs for DOOM and DOOM ][: HELL ON EARTH? Everyone knows Aliens TC I'm sure. The coolest thing about it was how, in following the general progression of the film, it was like a perfect combination of the atmosphere possible in more scripted modern FPS but with the speed and intensity of DOOM. The quality of the new sprites themselves were a bit questionable, even when the game was new the general murkiness of the adult aliens wasn't too good a match for the scenery, but the overall feel of the WAD is amazing. Great use of voice samples from the movie, sound effects, the works. Also a huge deal at the time because the first level has atmosphere but ZERO enemies, that's so cool. Plus it had some massive vertical space to experience moire effects on, though this is of course a non issue if you're playing on zDOOM or other more modern methods. There was a great Bubblegum Crisis mod too. The game and levels were the same but all of the weapons and sounds were very nice reproductions of abilities in the robotic suit Priss uses in that series. ANIME! Has anyone here made any rad maps themselves at any time? I did the usual kind of stuff like trying to duplicate your home or whatever. I had a lot fun playing around with teleporters and having them not do have any visible effect to try to create the illusion of being on a platform/level above another. Walking into water like it has depth, etc. Good times.

I actually remember finding the shareware version of DOOM in a local K-Mart, I was quite excited as the cover mentioned the brass knuckles you could use and that sounded really cool.
I also remember having a really hard time finding the chainsaw, which in the level it appears in, you cna easily see through a window, but had to find a bunch of secret doors to actually access.

Shooting something standing in front of you in "3D", with immediate effect - thus eliminating old-style video game bullets that had been there since Space Invaders provided a completely revolutionary, visceral experience. Doom is the game that created the formula and is a very, very important game. One of the biggest. It changed everything.

This was really cool in retrospect because it's in the second level of the first episode, so it trains you early on how to look around for hidden stuff along with the outdoor area with the chaingun and the soul sphere in the same level.

This was really cool in retrospect because it's in the second level of the first episode, so it trains you early on how to look around for hidden stuff along with the outdoor area with the chaingun and the soul sphere in the same level. The craziest thing about that area is the door is tagged to only open when shot. If my memory serves me right, that's the only door in the whole original game that uses that tag, like they coded it in just for that one trick! The modder dudes obviously found cool things to do with it though. Speaking of mods, there are too many great ones to count. I've spent the most time fooling around with Super Sonic Doom, the Megaman 8-bit Deathmatch, and the Russian Overkill weapon sets (they're OP to hilarious extents), but there's so many out there. I'll toot your horn too Weasel, I remember that Diaz and a Wolfenstein-y one were a blast.

Gonna second everything suggested above and bring some of my own favorites: Hideous Destructor - A mod that doesn't change the graphics much, but changes the gameplay completely---it turns DooM from a fast-paced arcade shooter into the slow, torturous, strangely addictive spawn of Ghost Recon and Dark Souls. The nutcrushing difficulty only makes ekeing out a victory that much more delicious. (Just be sure to READ THE MANUAL because boy howdy you will need to. Seriously.) And lastly, dat sweet, sweet manual shotgun-pumping. Worth noting---this is probably the only DooM mod that has both a weapon-bracing system (meaning propping your gun up on a ledge to make a steadier shot) and bullet-dropoff at long range. Brutal DooM Johnny Edition - A highly streamlined version of the (in)famous Brutal DooM. Features a much better fatality system (with much more substantial rewards for pulling one off), CoD-style quick grenades, and a quick-melee system that's not reliant on a dedicated fist button. As an additional plus, Johnny himself is a much friendlier and cooperative person than Brutal DooM's original author is/was. But those aren't the reason you should play BDJE---you should play it because it's the only DooM mod with gorillas in it. Contra DooM - Exactly what it says on the tin. Despite being a pretty simple mod, it is surprisingly quite fun and a great fit for DooM. ALIENS: The Ultimate DooM - A highly ambitious successor-in-progress to the original Aliens TC, with lots of added '90s arcade and console nostalgia thrown in for good measure, such as soundtracks from old Aliens games of that era. Prime Directive A choose-your-own-DooMventure-style level that serves as a sequel to Space Station Omega, an early ZDooM-exclusive WAD that served as an impressive example of what could be done with ZDooM's scripting. Ashes TC - A work-in-progress post-apocalyptic conversion in the vein of Fallout and Mad Max (and featuring mutants and bandits as enemies instead of demons) that will eventually run on the Freedoom2 IWAD and features new weapons, scarcity-based gameplay, new inventory items and a system for measuring radiation damage. Reelism - A combat arena WAD featuring a slot machine-type interface that randomizes your weapon selection, your enemies, and assorted stage variables. Highly addictive. DooM: The Golden Souls 2 - A sequel to the Mario 64-esque DooM: The Golden Souls. Will feature shops and a hub system, as well as a Nintendo game-based soundtrack! Has much more platforming than your usual DooM level. Demonsteele - Demon May Cry. A hybrid of oldschool shooter and spectacle fighter. Also a love letter of sorts to the days when anime was a new-ish thing in America and endearing weeaboo script kiddies made Geocities pages. It's a bit hard to describe here so I recommend just playing it. DooM: Beyond Reality - DooM on an acid trip. Plays nicely too, proving it's not just a gimmicky jokeWAD. Project MSX - DooM, Halo, and FEAR all had an angry, angry lovechild. Features regenerating shields, offhand melee and grenades, a slick interface, some VERY powerful weapons, and a new bestiary to provide a matching challenge. Ultimate DooM Visor - A HUD mod that adds some HEV-suit-style cosmetic features (i.e. biomonitor display and warning voice), and also some optional gameplay modifications of its own. Compatible with several mods. Sneaky DooM - A noteworthy stab at adding stealth mechanics to DooM. GMOTA - Oldschool Castlevania meets DooM. Try it with Eternal DooM---it's VERY fitting. Serpent: Resurrection - HUGE mod for Hexen that changes it into a more Elder Scrolls-esque game in terms of both mechanics and scale. Put aside an afternoon or three for this one. Push: Griefing Made Legal - A Zandronum-compatible multiplayer mod that plays like an unholy combination of Quake III and sumo wrestling. Fun times. Threshold of Pain: Special Edition - A well-made tribute to the PSX and N64 iterations of DooM, with their colored lighting and creepy ambient soundtracks and all, while still adding its own unique ZDooM features.. Has a sequel in progress.Metroid: Dreadnaught - Play as Samus Aran instead of DooMguy! Lizard Squad - No relation to the hacker group, this is an MS Paint-styled mod that nonetheless has serious gameplay. Recommended for all you Metal Slug fans in the audience. Mortal Kombat 3 - From the same guy who's managed to make Resident Evil and Donkey Kong Country emulations-of-sorts in DooM, he's now turned his sights towards making a working fighting game. DOOMERO-21 is some sort of coding god and if he doesn't already have a job as a programmer he should. The Adventures of Square - Family-friendly standalone IWAD in the vein of Chex Quest, with greater attention turned towards making use of ZDooM's features. Colorful and fun. Aliens: Colonial Marines TC - Another (unrelated) Aliens conversion, this one is a higher-tech remake of the original Aliens TC rather than a modular gameplay mod like the one mentioned above. Demon Eclipse - Unfortunately discontinued, this mod has lots of new graphics, new guns, and new enemies, and still features enough content for an interesting playthrough. Gene-Tech: Before the Storm - A ZDooM-feature-heavy mod with brand new everything, featuring bits and pieces from SiN...And some storyline tie-ins to Quake II. Pirate DooM - A playful Monkey Island-themed WAD with both great humor and solid gameplay. And to close out this huge post: Fuck yeah.

After playing through a batch of Doom levels, I started wondering... how was the series advertised in places like Japan, where the first person shooter and DOS PCs aren't as popular?
It'd be funny to see Cacodemon-based products over there, much like how they advertise Dragon Quest with the Blue Slime.

I kinda wonder how it was too. I recall seeing someone say that Doom and whatnot weren't really popular in Japan due to consoles being more popular, even if a few of them did hit home consoles there, and as far as I know the only ones that got releases on PC-98 were Wolf3D and the two Doom games. Found this on DoomWiki, which has some boxarts too. I find it amusing how one of the releases refers to it as "3D Alien Busters: DOOM".

I'm guessing you've played the levels by that Yukio Ide guy, have you? Nope, though they look hilarious. Kind of like Noroi no Yakata, in a way. I heard some versions had green blood, weirdly enough. I'm kind of wondering what they did with the "steroid" packs that give you Berserk mode, or if they just didn't care enough to remove it?

Why no DOOM/Chex Quest crossover yet?

Why no DOOM/Chex Quest crossover yet? *cough cough* Samsara *cough hack* I'm personally wondering why there haven't been any attempts at a Quake version of Chex Quest. I guess Quake modding is still in its infancy. Anyway, back on topic: You guys got a favorite weapon? I like the SSG even though it's slow and kind-of-sort-of weak-ish.
