Yeah, kinda surprised the article makes no mention of it considering this is a straight rip-off of that game's art direction.

Came to this topic to mention that there's an obscure Nintendo DS game with a suspiciously similar art style that was released a couple of years earlier, but judging by the posts, it's not as obscure as I thought

To be fair, the art style in Dark Spire was more influenced by pulp/horror comic books than old RPG manuals, and way cooler in my opinion.

To be fair, the art style in Dark Spire was more influenced by pulp/horror comic books than old RPG manuals, and way cooler in my opinion. It's certainly helped by the fact that the character/monster designs are looking less amateurish, but also actually use a color or two to make them stand out against the backgrounds. Also, I still think Mugen no Shinzou was a bit an inspiration to The Dark Spire, too. But that might just be more.
