Since the first time I heard the amazing rendition of Final Fight's music in the Sega CD version in 1993, I've had a dream. What if we could play the real arcade Final Fight with that music? I got sick of dreaming, sat down, and hacked around MAME's CPS1 driver, figured out the commands for the sound hardware, and created a modified version of MAME that plays FLAC versions of Final Fight CD's music instead of the arcade samples. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMSpS8FZMykIt's pretty fantastic. I've always felt that the people who did Final Fight CD's music deserved more exposure. It's really one of the best game OSTs that I can think of.

Is it possible to improve the volume? The music tends to get overtaken by the sound effects.

Wow, this is honestly really impressive. I've never listened to much of FF's Sega CD soundtrack, but this might get me to do it.
You know what else would be cool? Hacking the arcade version of SSFT2 to use the 3DO soundtrack. Or maybe even the PC CD/Amiga CD32 soundtrack. Both of those have a few good tracks in them.

Well then, now to build in prisoner Cody from Final Fight One to create the TRUE ultimate version.

Is it possible to improve the volume? The music tends to get overtaken by the sound effects. Yes, I've already fixed that. The volume levels are a lot better now.

The other thing that might be interesting is hacking SF2: WW through SF2: HF to use the higher quality sound effects that are in Hyper SF2 for CPS2. Hyper SF2 has both the old and new style sound effects.

That is awesome! I didn't knew the Mega CD version's soundtrack was that good. Now I want to play it too. Thanks for sharing.

Wow...so you could get real creative with these and simply add totally different soundtracks to games? Imagine playing Final Fight with the Streets of Rage soundtracks...

Yes, you could play arbitrary audio files. You could even replace the sound effects if you wanted to. So far, I've been able to successfully hack: * Neo Geo games * Final Fight * CPS1 Street Fighter 2 games

So you could play some Neo Geo games with their NGCD versions' soundtracks but without the long loading times and removed details that usually came with them? The possibilities for funny/awesome soundtrack swaps or good fan remixes are also endless. Great job, hopefully it'll be an example for other programmers.

Funny you mention that, because I just figured out the sound commands for Samurai Shodown II for this very reason.
