you know, sometimes I look at the HG101 facebook page and see a link to something which makes me think 'this looks like a jdarkside article' - and I'm never wrong. that's not a criticism jdarkside by the way, it's just that he's one of the few writers here that can be instantly recognized by the games he choses to cover.

Is the dialogue as boring in the original as it is in the translation?

I had exactly the same thought...and it's not a bad thing at all since the games he reviews are often from genres I'm not very familiar with - for example I discovered the existence of Always Sometimes Monsters thanks to his review and I liked it a lot.

My goal is to reveal the existence of weird stuff a lot of you guys may overlook. I'm currently trying to get an article done before the Undertale one goes up over The Halloween Hack, an Earthbound ROM hack made by Toby Fox that includes both a river of gore and psychological freakouts.

the whole Earthbound clone 'genre' is pretty interesting (I've written an article for NG about it but it's not out yet): you've got narrative focus, surreal horror and light-hearted comedy within a single 'genre' (or within a single game) but the roots are always visible whether it's LISA, Undertale, Yume Nikki, OFF or Contact.

The Halloween hack is especially interesting because it takes a story element from the original Earthbound and sends it in a bananas direction. It's like Earthbound made by an edgy teenager who was actually a pretty competent writer when it came to concept, theme and build-up.

So he's the guy who wrote this, interesting.
But anyway, I remember when I heard about the "localization" I cringed as I'm not very fond of the kind where they pointlessly change names and such just to make it sound more "familiar" for non-Eastern audiences (and don't get me started on Ace Attourney's "localization" when it obviously takes place in Japan). However the fact that the game had it's names reverted back to their original Japanese names surprised me and IMO sets a good example in that Eastern games don't have to have pointless name changes. Now if only we can start calling "Megaman" Rockman, that'll be the day.

Localization can be good or bad, depends on how the translators care for the material. Recettear is a great example of localization done right in the wrong ways, done by some very amateur people but with a lot of love for the game presented. They put their own stamp on the game and made it really stand out from the crowd with their odd additions to he comedy bits, while keeping the story completely intact.

"...in the vain of Phoenix Wright" should be "vein of" Also, apart of is not correct, it should be a part of. I sure hope the books this site is flogging are proofread by someone who has half a clue, because the articles on the site are a fucking joke of third-grade reject grammar or outright broken English ala ESL.
