www.hardcoregaming101.net/blood/blood.htmThe best game using 3D Realms' Build Engine, Blood has an unmistakable visual and atmospheric style that marries H. P. Lovecraft with Unforgiven and Evil Dead, and drops the player into the Roaring Twenties of a dilapidated America where violence is so over-the-top it's borderline parody. Also followed up with a not-so-good sequel.

Its a real shame Devolver never got the rights for updated re-release (said it was too expensive). Blood is so fun to play and I'd love to play it more with higher visuals and such.

Fuck. Yes. Blood is still my all-time favourite first-person shooter. What I love the most about it is that it is actually genuinely witty for the most part, rather than having to rely on tired dick jokes and racist caricatures as a sorry attempt at humour. That alone sets it above Duke Nukem and Shadow Warrior in my book. The second game, of course, then went all overboard with the silliness (though it still had its moments of dry wit, like the dead body in the washing machine in episode 1).

Shoot, Blood was on sale for a song not long ago and I passed up the chance to buy it, now I'm kicking myself, however I gave Blood 2 a shot once and yeah, it sucks, but I had no idea the original game is so good though, I'm glad to hear it.
Monolith seem to be pretty inconsistent, but when they managed to pull it off they've got to be one of the more underrated developers ever, NOLF 1 and 2 are definitely high on my "most underrated games of all time" list.

It needs to be acknowledged, though, that Blood wasn't developed by Monolith themselves. The bulk of the game's content was made by a 3DRealms subsidiary, which were eventually sold off to Monolith.

Loved this game ever since I found the first episode on a CD full of shareware and shovelware stuff in middle school or so. I played it a lot even figuring out how to enter the secret level! Then I played the complete version of the game and more or less finished it. Another thing I liked is how all the levels are connected one another: for example in the 1st episode Caleb starts in the morgue, escapes to the station, takes the train which crashes next to an amusement park, etc. Never bothered with the second game since everyone said it sucked ass, plus it came out about at the same time of Half-Life, so nobody bothered still.
CRUDUX CRUO!!!

Never bothered with the second game since everyone said it sucked ass You have no idea. I really tried to play through it again after buying it again for the sake of the review, and could not do it. It's soul-crushingly boring. If Blood is Evil Dead, Blood 2 is Manos: Hands of Fate. Wish I'd found that tidbit while researching. That explains a lot about the sequel's quality.

Yup; there's actually an alpha floating around that still has 3D Realms' logo on it.

That alone sets it above Duke Nukem and Shadow Warrior in my book. The second game, of course, then went all overboard with the silliness (though it still had its moments of dry wit, like the dead body in the washing machine in episode 1). Exactly. I always liked the contrast in Blood's presentation - while Caleb is a genuinely evil character and the game is one of the most gruesome ever released it never tries to pass as "cool" and "edgy" and it's not afraid to show its silly side, for example the high-pitched "I will swallow your soul!" the hands repeatedly say or the fart elevator in the level before the final boss. It also helps that Blood is one of the best old school FPS games ever made: the level design is absolutely stellar and the urge to see what comes next (or what is going to kill you next considering how brutal this game is) is alway present. That said I've never tried the sequel and judging from the comments I don't think I will. Come to think of it, 1997 was a great year for first person shooters: we had this game, Outlaws, Powerslave and the first Jedi Knight (or the second Dark Forces, depending on where you are looking) - not bad! MARANA PALLEX!

Even with some great games here and there like No One Lives Forever, to me it wasn't really til F.E.A.R. and Shadow of Mordor that Monolith really redeemed themselves for inflicting LithTech upon the world. It took a few years but the engine finally became good.

I like SHOGO a lot too but LithTech also gave us KISS: Psycho Circus, Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza, Gods and Generals, Codename Nina: Global Terrorism Strike Force/Nina: Agent Chronicles, etc.

For all its faults, I did enjoye KISS: Psycho Circus when it was new. But then Serious Sam came out, and Psycho Circus immediately was rendered absolutely irrelevant.
