I remember this one, but could not get into it when it was new. But I thought the concept was very interesting. I should try it some time aigan....Thank GOG that it's possible;) I never knew there was a sequel. It's funny to me that stuff I still remember being new and being discussed in magazines now deemed as "obscure" or "overlooked"....I think this era of PC gaming bears a lot more unrecognized gems with minor flaws.

A good friend of mine had the game. We always wanted to like it, but it was overwhelmingly anal about some things, and overall, a tad too dry and not fun enough. And that's coming from a German! So, yeah, the concept was pretty interesting, but the execution held it back.

I believe that A Piece of the Action was just what they called the demo. Fake Edit: While I was writing this post, I did some digging on eBay and found an auction for A Piece of the Action, with hi-res photos of all sides of the case. It is indeed just a demo disc, one that only contains 2 single-player levels and the tutorial (Along with a free trial of America OnLine!). As a side note, as soon as I saw that jewel case, a memory came back to me: standing in the local CompUSA, seeing the boxed copy for around $30, and then spotting that little jewel case for $5 or $10 on the budget-title shelf. At first, I thought that it was just the standard jewel case budget re-release, but then I spotted that asterisk on the back, and immediately put it back on the shelf. But anyways, Gangsters is one of those unique ideas that I'm quite surprised hasn't been updated/remade. Perhaps that may be partially due to GTA hitting it big, as pretty much all crime-focused games after GTAIII were following that open-world shooter mold, leaving very little room for a humble SimCapone. Heh, maybe a game like Gangsters would be a good fit for Paradox's grand strategy saga.

I couldn't imagine what it could've been if it wasn't the demo, but it's impossible to find info on the thing. It's not even mentioned on the wikipedia article. I agree with elektro, too, that there are a lot of obscure little gems from this era.

Wow, never thought to see an article about "Gangsters" on this. A big thank you to mikemacdee! I loved this game as a kid and even watched the movie "Hoodlum" (or "Harlem, N.Y.C.", which it is called over here), which was promoted within the game? Or at least somewhere in the manual? I cant' remember but the movie was not that great.
Anyhow i remember countless summernights playing this game with a friend of mine and trying to find out how not to be broke after for 4/5 weeks in the game. so we were blown away, when we discovered that you could build illegal businesses behind the legal ones. the game never told you about that, but maybe we should have read the manual...
