That's about sums it, yeah. Even with that aside, the design of stage 3 in Adventure is quite possibly the most bullshit level I've ever run across in my life. Belmont's Revenge doesn't have anything even close to that, so it wins by a country mile.

Fallout - I've played all the main games except for 4, which I'm waiting for the eventual Complete Edition of. I also haven't played Tactics, or Brotherhood of Steel. Fallout was the next franchise I was going to mention, I've tried Tactics but it sucks (it's basically just the combat with all the RPG elements removed, not sure why someone thought that was a good idea) but I was curious about Brotherhood of Steel and decided to go ahead and buy it recently, it might make a good "palette cleanser" after I finish Fallout 4. They made a lot of top down action RPGs like that back then, the ones I remember really enjoying were the Champions of Norrah games, so it's interesting that they made a Fallout in that style, it didn't get very good reviews at the time and while I'm not expecting anything amazing I'm hoping it might be decent, I'll let you know what I think when I get around to trying it.

I remember working with a guy who was a huge fan of Champions of Norrath. He was a former hardcore EQ player, though, so that might have colored his perception a bit. I never played Champions, but it looked like the console Baldur's Gate games, but with an EQ coat of paint. Can't be all that bad, can it?

The Champions games are basically Diablo but with direct character control. Those kinds of games got weirdly common in the early PS2 generation. Brotherhood of Steel is about the same way, except somehow they've made the guns really unsatisfying to use.

THAT'S what Brotherhood of Steel was like? Wow.

I really enjoyed Champions of Norrath (especially the character generation) as well as the Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance games. Wish there were more games like that.

@jasonx Yeah, that's what I've heard about Portable Ops. I've always seen it as the one that got away though.
Mega Man is one that I missed a lot of too. Played all the original series, X1-5, ZX, and very little of Legends. Played a bunch of Soccer too, but missed the later X titles as well as all the Battle Network and Star Force games. No real interest in them though.

Are there any deep cuts for a series as popular as Mega Man? If so, here we go:
-6 is a very fun game. It gets buried under the "it was all downhill after 3"-rubble, but really, it's superbly designed. A bit easy, but great music and lots of exploration for a NES Mega Man game. -7 if beloved on these boards, so you already know it's great. -8 is in my top 5 of the classic series. It's cute and all, but it has incredibly detailed spritework.
-X5 is the last very good game in the X series. X8 is okay I guess, but really, X2 and X5 seem to be the most overlooked of the great ones.
-ZX Advent is a total blast. ZX is also a lot of fun, but ZX Advent is mentioned less, and has the better map system, so it gets the nod from me.
-Zero 1 & 3 are better than X6 - X8. Not quite X1 - X4 level greatness, but about as good as X5.

I've never played Portable Ops either and don't have a strong desire to either since I didn't care much for Peace Walker and Portable Ops is supposedly a less good version of Peace Walker. But, never say never since Kojima related Metal Gears, much like IGA related Castlevanias are now a finite thing so I may play it someday purely out of curiosity, I also do tentatively have plans to maybe replay Peace Walker someday as well.

Peace Walker is infinitely more tolerable in the HD version, thanks to the extra analog stick. Still doesn't fix the main issue of every level being too small and simplistic, and the infinite grind of repetitive missions to unlock everything, though.
Both games would have been much better served by being full console experiences from the get go.

I too feel like scaling down Metal Gear Solid to a handheld platform was a bad idea from the get go.

You know for series I enjoy. I rarely miss parts of it. Even if they are only for a few hours.

You know, I never played Portable Ops yet I have a PSP now but I'm quite hesitant to get a copy of it and play it given that it's canon status is disputed (though at least it's better than the lame pachislot game that's coming out). That and Ghost Babel though I did try it out in an emulator and I'm quite impressed with it so much to the point of wanting to get a physical copy.

Yeah, I was so pissed when Ground Zeroes (and by extension, Phantom Pain) ended up using the radio style of Peace Walker. It was the right move to make, but still...
