You know, I never played Portable Ops yet I have a PSP now but I'm quite hesitant to get a copy of it and play it given that it's canon status is disputed (though at least it's better than the lame pachislot game that's coming out). That and Ghost Babel though I did try it out in an emulator and I'm quite impressed with it so much to the point of wanting to get a physical copy. Ghost Babel is another Metal Gear deep cut I've yet to play though that one's definitely on the to do list. The HD version is the one I played and I didn't like for the very reasons you mentioned. I too feel like scaling down Metal Gear Solid to a handheld platform was a bad idea from the get go. Yeah, I was so pissed when Ground Zeroes (and by extension, Phantom Pain) ended up using the radio style of Peace Walker. It was the right move to make, but still... I miss the Codec as well, why they couldn't have kept it like MGS3 where it was mostly optional but there was still plenty of dialog to listen to if you wanted to is beyond me.

The new way is just faster-paced, I guess. MGS is pretty notorious for being slow as molasses, so I can see why they did it. Still miss the old way, though. You're not going to get any "giant tank made out of shit" conversations with the newer style.
As far as Ghost Babel goes, I had a really hard time with it on an actual GBC. Maybe it's just my poor eyesight, but everything was just so damn small. Made it difficult for me to plot out movements efficiently.

If you're hesitant about PO because it's non-canon, why is Ghost Babel acceptable?

I thought Portable Ops was canon? At least loosely.

It was when it was released, but Kojima has backtracked on it a bit since he only produced and didnt write/direct it. He acknowledges that the major events happen, but the actions of the characters, dialogue, relationships formed he does not accept. Basically if he didn't write it, it's 100% canon.

Ok, but still don't understand why you'd stay away based on that?

Yeah, why would canon matter at all? The old Marvel series "What If...?" was 100% non-canon, but still fun as hell. It's not like Kojima gets a dollar every time you refuse to play a non-canon game.

I can only imagine the existential crisis that must come when a game starts as canon but then get retconned out (a la the Castlevania series with Legends, Circle of the Moon, and the N64 games).
Also, I'm surprised at how much carts of MGS on GBC go for these days.

I'm glad I have Metal Gear: Ghost Babel on the Game Boy Color I don't have the box or manual, but I'm still happy to have gotten it when it wasn't as expensive as it is now. Someday, I shall play it... I'm thinking about waiting until after I give Revengeance a try though. In case I end up not liking Revengeance, at least I'll have another traditional-style Metal Gear game to play through. Fallout - I've played all the main games except for 4, which I'm waiting for the eventual Complete Edition of. I also haven't played Tactics, or Brotherhood of Steel. Fallout was the next franchise I was going to mention, I've tried Tactics but it sucks (it's basically just the combat with all the RPG elements removed, not sure why someone thought that was a good idea) but I was curious about Brotherhood of Steel and decided to go ahead and buy it recently, it might make a good "palette cleanser" after I finish Fallout 4. Well, I love tactical combat games like X-COM, so I think I'd still likely enjoy Fallout Tactics, as long as the combat is fun to do.

See, the thing is is it's not all like a typical tactics games, it's not grid based (unless I'm stupid and missed something in the menu) The combat is almost the same as in 1&2 and making a whole game dedicated to the combat with any RPG elements removed makes the game too repetitious to me.

That was the problem I had with Shining Force CD. The non-battle portions of that series aren't exactly the deepest examples of that sort of thing, but 100% combat gets old really fast.

That was the single issue with Shining Force as a whole really. It had a plot, and it was cool, but only lasted five minutes before getting wrapped up in another hour long fight. Revive your fallen, buy herbs and seeds, fight again! I love Shining Force, but I have to break away from it every now and then.

Anyway, two for me.
First off there's the first Persona game. It's the only one I don't have, and it's the only one I practically never hear anyone talk about, and when they do, it's usually negative. I'd like to get it before it gets costly, but I just can't bring myself to do it.
The other being BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II. I already know what I'm in for really. I own and have played the hell outta every other game in the series, but because it's the only one I don't have, I kinda want it. Stupid yes, but I want it all the same. Being a fast paced fighting game for the 3DS, I can't imagine it'll play well, but I'd still have a BlazBlue game for the 3DS! (Not counting BlayzBloo, 'cause that's a joke and everyone knows it.)
Like many Japanese games, I'll forever regret not getting it when I had the chance.

Castlevania: The Adventure is only redeemed by its awesome soundtrack. The game is garbage, aside from that. Thankfully, Belmont's Revenge fixes pretty much every issue that Adventure had, and has a pretty damn good soundtrack of its own, too. Of course, most of Adventure's failings can be chalked up to the fact that it was a Game Boy game from 1989. Most franchises stumbled at the beginning on that platform, but recovered with their next iteration. As for the topic at hand, I've always wanted to play Shin Megami Tensei...if, but it's one of the last major SMT games to not have an English translation. Supposedly it was pretty close to being finished last year, but I haven't heard anything about it for a while now. moran and X-pert74 - Portable Ops was okay for its time, since it had a lot of voice acting in a handheld Metal Gear game in 2006. Unfortunately, it was an absolute pain to play through without a second analog stick. You also had to recruit people for your personal army, much like Peace Walker and MGSV, only instead of using the Fulton system, you had to manually drag them all the way back to a truck located within your current level. Extremely annoying. The story also didn't make a lick of sense, but that's kind of par for the course by this point. I really want to play SMT: ...if someday.

Supposedly it's a huge pain in the ass to actually play. Even more archaic and rigid than Persona 1. Even so...It tasks me. It tasks me, and I shall have it!
