Great article as usual! Had no idea about the planned third game.
Also, one fun fact regarding the second game... there's an unlicensed argentinian-made Genesis game titled Truco '96 (based off of the card game of the same name) which steals various tunes from Battle Mania Daiginjou. It's really jarring.

Liked the original, loved the sequel; everything about them (the gameplay, the characters, the overall presentation) is just so damn FUN. Also, the Super Famicom stomping will never not be funny.
I remember seeing a picture of them playing volleyball with a Super Famicom (and a hammer), too. That render from the cancelled game is heinous though.

That render from the cancelled game is heinous though. Seriously, the least someone could do is tell her that her fly is totally open...

Thanks for scanning in all of those Battle Mania N.Y. design docs. They look pretty good, considering how small they were printed. One notable reference in the second game: the caped Marios that drop green mushrooms. Socket, star of another Vic Tokai game, is also in the flock, but you can't shoot him. Madison's hatred of the Super Famicom is a running gag in Trouble Shooter / Battle Mania fan art. Here's the volleyball one you mentioned. I love all the background details in this...and the "Sega All-Heroins" part. That's Rosa from Undercover Cops. I don't know if there's any connection between the games apart from both being cult favorites. I don't understand the pun here. OK, I recognize Doropie/Francesca, Cotton, Madison, Pocky, the Dig Dug enemies, and maybe Crystal (in the car). Who's the girl at the bottom? Arle from Puyo Puyo? Another one with Doropie/Francesca and a properly handled SFC. Vic Tokai characters gotta stick together. This one has nothing to do with the Super Famicom. I just like it: SNK vs. Capcom's cover redrawn as Vic Tokai vs. Jaleco, with Madison taking on the creepy pantsless villain from The Game Paradise.

The composers of Daiginjou also did Time Dominator 1st/Socket (Socket almost even sounds like the name Sonic), later did Marble's Hotdog Storm arcade and Imagineer's FIST for Saturn and PS1.

New translation of a long interview with Vic Tokai programmer and creator of the Battle Mania games Takayan shmuplations.com/battlemania/ It talks briefly about other Vic Tokai games and the company in general, and then has a long interview about the games themselves.

That was also a good read! Too bad we'll never see a third game in the series though...
