It's a shame there's really not too much to discuss here. People are so caught up in any potential "agenda" behind the article (since this is the internet, where everyone's an expert) that they're not even touching on the content as it relates to the topic.

My cousin is quick to label me a "Jap friend" he also thinks all asians are Slanty eyed (yet he's in love with this hot korean girl) Grrrr.
The Truth is I Love all asian cultures, The Food and tradtions and contrasts of Thailand, the refugees of Laos, The many people and food in Vietnam. The Harsh muslims of Malaysia and Indonesia the growing freedoms and just about everything else in China, the growing tech in Korea and of course Japan.

I thought your article was a fair view of both styles of games. To bad there isn't more games being produced in the the European market, other then adventure games. It would have been nice to compare the 3 markets.
I'll joke around and say I'm wapanese (I've spent to much time on 4chan). But I don't feel the Japanese are better or anything like that. I had a friend who was like that, well it's better because it's Japanese. I never his attitude with that because he would never listen to Brinty Spears but he would listen to the Japanese equivalent and his answer would be "Because it's Japanese" I was like that doesn't make shit any less shit then it already is.
I just seem to find more stuff interesting in the anime & manga world. American cartoons for the most part have lacked something for me, don't get me wrong I've enjoyed my share but I think what anime had that most American cartoons didn't have was a continuing story line with a beginning, middle, and end. I find that something lacking in American tv in general. I want a god damned conclusion people!
I read my share of American comics and I still do enjoy a lot of them but with manga there is much more verity of kinds of titles. There really any comics aimed for girls, while there are titles girls tend to like, (Sandman, Fables ect.) there really isn't anything dealing with issues girls deal with which is another appeal to manga.
With video games I started playing console, I wasn't exposed to computer games until later. I love PC RPGS but the sad fact is today not that many come out that are not some MMO. I don't really like MMOs, once again I like conclusions and and MMOs get boring to me after a while. I enjoy JRPGs but as some know my favorite series is Shin Megami Tensei which is a lot more free and has a lot more customization to it then say Final Fantasy. I enjoy RPGs like Final Fantasy, but not so much as I did 5 years ago they just don't engross me as much as they used to.
I love adventure games (which seems to survive as a genre thanks to Europe), it seems something most American gamers have moved past. Now it's all FPS and war games, and for someone who likes something slower paced there isn't much of a selection. I even like turned based strategy games but trying to find one that isn't real-time anymore is a tough quest.
Also I'll have to agree with your point that Japanese like to do more "Artsy" games while American like more realistic games. I had that JGR Tony Hawk comparison while I worked at EB, the person didn't care if JGR was the greatest game on earth it just looked to cartoonish to play.
And the artsy feeling to Japanese games is what draws me to them, because I'm an artsy person. And if someone can honestly say Okami isn't one of the most beautiful gaming experiences ever then they need a punch in the face.

...I'm really surprised people have accused you of being a Japanophile considering one of your captions called Squal a "whiny emo-kid." Or something to that effect. Not only that, but the whole article was valid. Americans prefer their heros to be masculine gun-toting psychos (I know I sure do) whereas Japan seems more interested in Metro heros.
I dunno. People suck. That's all there is to it. I'll bet half of those people accusing you didn't bother to read past the first page before they got on their soap boxes. Their masculine soap boxes, of course.

I think it's a very balanced article. What I liked the most is the fact it focused on differences, not on cultural superiorities. But then again, the more you flame on the Internet, the biggest your penis is,so who cares about the article, when you can insult it's author anyway? So,better don't care about flames on the Internet, most of the times it's just ego boosting.

Cool place, and now when I go there I started a discussion about anime and a bunch of people came into the topic and posted stuff like "FUCKING WEABOOS GET THE FUCK OUT" Yeah this is what I'm talking about specifically. I've gotten the impression that once the whole anime/manga thing hit mainstream, then you're going to get a lot more people hating because of that. I guess it's only something I've noticed specifically in the past year or two although it crops up all of the time with other topics. There's a difference between "loving all things just because they're Japanese" and "having an interest in their culture and products" but these seem to be identical in the minds of a lot of people. Go internet! Anyway thanks for the feedback guys. Sometimes when you write a certain way for such a long time, you begin to question your voice, and think maybe things aren't being conveyed the way you want them to be. I don't let the flames bother me too much though, although it is a lot less stressful to write for here than it is for a place like 1up.

I actually stumbled upon your article a few days back, but I didn't know that was yours. It was really good, and you presented yourself as someone who knows what they're talking about, as you've brought upon things that I've subconsciously accepted on both sides of game development. Just let them talk. It's their fault for choosing to remain ignorant anyway.

On that note, I think a very successful and kinda-nerdy drinking game would be playing through FF8's first disc and downing a shot of beer whenever the word "whatever" is said. Chances are it'll all end with some pretty wasted gamers.

Well Kurt, You'll be happy to know that your article went over well with the folks at Hooligans. No accusations of 'Japanophile' to be found, even though the thread had a slight derailment near the end. hooligansofthenight.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=16445&postdays=0&postorder=ascyeah, the site IS alive (forum wise at least). even though it seems dead (the comment I get most often) BTW, you really shouldn't concern yourself with the 1up boards. There's mass idiocy, and then there's the 1up forums. . .where PSX games make up 80% of the discussion in the Old-school forums.

Actually the 1up forums had a lot of good discussion on it too, which was pretty surprising.
And that forum you linked was pretty much what I hoped to provoke. People may not necessarily agree with what I wrote - which is okay, because they are pretty much just opinions and theories - but if it sparks discussion, that's cool.
Oddly enough, the one kid there who disagreed with various stuff there linked to my Killer7 article, then completely went on to misinterpret what I'd said. Nice.
I think a big mistake I made was not clarifying that, when talking about groups of anything - people or games - you can really only talk in generalizations. For every one major points, there are usually at least a handful of counterpoints. That's why there's lots of "tends to be" language. I thought this was naturally assumed but I guess I was wrong.
