So lemme guess, the SimCopter part is going to mention the controversy over the developer secretly implementing gay men kissing?

I'm not sure an easter egg that is only regulary happening on one or two specific days of the year, which was patched out quickly, and of which the spokesperson said they got "only a few complaints", can be called a controversy rather than an fun little fyi tidbit. Even if the guy got fired for it.

Yeah, less than I expected considering the only times I've seen SimCopter talked it almost always focuses on that easter egg. Anyway, it's a shame EA had to fuck around with Will Wright's dream game Spore and now one of gaming's greatest minds is retired from the industry altogether, with the closing of Maxis this makes me wonder what the future for the "Sim" series is, while I'm sure EA will continue milking The Sims (but who would develop it?) it seems unlikely Sim City will continue after the debacle that was the 2013 one.

This might be overly pedantic on my part, but Maxis as a corporate entity still exists, though they did close down the Maxis Emeryville Studio. Then again, EA Maxis might consist of The Sims Studio, EA Salt Lake and Maxis Helsinki. Then AGAIN, EA Maxis, Bioware and EA Mobile might be part of EA Worldwide Studios, I don't know. Their corporate structure is more confusing than Reed Elsevier.

What I wonder is, why does literally everything EA touch eventually turn to shit? From Maxis to Westwood to Bioware everything EA owns will eventually go into the shitter no matter what.
I still find it hard to believe that they ruined Bioware and I'm not even a ravenous fanboy or anything (though I did like them) but to think that such an acclaimed studio has been ruined by EA is just staggering.
If it wasn't for Madden football EA probably would gone the way of THQ years ago because they are shoddily run.

EA has the habbit of buying companies that are pretty much already dead due to missmanagement or flopped games and such. But as it turns out, putting a corpse in the freezer doesn't make it alive again, it just buys a bit of time until the stink gets noticed.

I wouldn't necessarily say things have gotten worse so much as we are part of a subculture that EA doesn't consider financially viable. The quality of their games is less of an issue compared to things like the EA spouse debacle or the frivolous lawsuit against Origin Systems. You or I might not particularly care about DICE's interpretation of the Star Wars Battlefront IP, but there is clearly an audience for it. Every once in a while, we might get lucky and find something that seems interesting to us (for me it was the original Mirror's Edge). And Bioware itself isn't exactly blameless in its shift in priorities. I'm sure you can probably find someone out there complaining about the oversimplification of their products starting from Knight of the Old Republic onward. Personally, my own cutoff point was about around Mass Effect 2. Though I will admit that EA might have somewhat diluted the strength of the Bioware brand name, since it seems to be associated with multiple corporate entities these days.

It's strange that after all this time, so many of the old Sim games still haven't been rereleased. The only old one you can find on GOG is SimCity 2000. I'm sure people would buy a bundle including the likes of SimFarm, SimAnt, SimHealth, SimEarth, and SimLife - or maybe even the the ever-topical SimHealth. There might be some technical problems with some of the Windows 3.x versions, but whatever they could put together ought to be worth a couple of bucks – even if they're not all that much fun, people would surely pay to have "Historical Archives!" in their backlogs. Maybe there's some sort of legal trouble holding them up?
Getting back on topic, didn't the PSX port of SimCity 2000 include something vaguely like SimCopter or Streets?

I too wish there more Sim games on GOG. It's possible it'll happen someday, I assume EA thinks it's a lack of interest though.

More to the point, this was a good article, if a bit liberal with assumptions passed off as facts. I never really ventured into the greater Sim-verse beyond SimEarth (shudder), so it's interesting to learn about these lesser titles.

I agree, for me, it is one of the best articles I've seen on here (or any other gaming site for that matter)because it tries hard to see the games from the point of view of different time periods and sees the larger picture in general, kudos to that. As for my personal experience... I remember playing the original SimCity in 1990, and it was amazing, also because it was way easier to use for me, still being pretty young, than say, populous or the likes, i think it was the first strategy/simulation game I understood and where able to play. So it holds a special place in my heart.SimCopter und Streets-Yeah, I tried both when they were new but....nope. Wasn't for me, I didn't like flight sims to begin with, and there were simply way better car combat games out there already As with lesser known sim games, SimAnt was amazing, I never tried SimEarth....only SimPark and Simtown, which, well, bored my quickly, maybe I was already too old then. But SimAnt-would love an article about that. And I would love to hear how it is for people who get to experience it now for the first time..

I remember SimCopter as nothing but garbage. I borrowed it from a friend that ended up equally unenthused. I only had the original SimCity so whatever enjoyment could be rung from flying around your own city was lost on me.
The less said about Streets of SimCity, the better.
