Seriously, every forum needs one of these.
I'll start with the basics of the basic, internet browsers. Whatever people will tell you, Internet Explorer is a security risk, that's a fact not to be taken lightly.
Opera browser, at first this browser had a huge banner that could only be removed via purchase. Nontheless, it's secure, fast, and has some groundbreaking features. Good for the ones who want an all-in-one package.
Mozilla Firefox, at first it was just a "Mozilla light", for faster browsing but less features. In the end the original Mozilla got faster than the Firefox, but its light interface and add-on feature make it highly customisable, as well as newb-friendly.
-----------------------------------------------
Next, anti-virus programs, these I recommend using once a week to keep things clean.
Ad-Aware SP, this thing is pretty easy to use and frequently updated.
Spybot - Search and Destroy, notable for its immunization feature, updating frequently is essential.
hijackthis, this tool is for extreme measures, and is only advised for the really skilled, as this thing can delete everything.
----------------------------------
And finally, media players, I'll be catagorising this in two: video and audio.
Audio players first:
WinAmp, this little program is infamous, it looks good, sounds good, and can play very much from the get-go, recommended for the flashy-inclined.
Foobar 2000, simple-looking program that can play literally anything from the get-go, and can nearly do anything if you find the right modules.
Then, video players:
VideoLAN, also known as VLC, this is a slow player, but it's very compatible, and has an OK GUI.
MPlayer, the thinking man's video player, this player can play pretty much anything, it's also fast, if you don't mind the lack of GUI (a feature very recently implemented).
