What game has been sitting the longest in you backlog? Do you still plan to complete it someday and why haven't you done so yet? Alternatively, you can also go by release year.
For me, in terms of games owned continually, it's Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries. Got it for Christmas 1996 and still have it. I've played it tons of times over the years, but never beat it. There was always some annoying mission down the road that made me give up and play something else. Last time was probably oven ten years ago. I do plan to beat one, but I kinda wanna play MW2 first and I've been waiting for the series to make it to GOG, since setting them up can be a bitch.
On a related note, how did I get so old...

By release year, maybe Rogue, from 1980 originally. I want to give it a shot, but I've also heard it's really tough and complex, and that it could take me years to actually beat, so... hmm...
By how long it has been in my personal backlog, perhaps one of the NES games I own, like... Crystalis, perhaps. I've enjoyed what little I've tried of it; I just haven't gotten around to actually sitting down to play through the whole thing.

There's a couple different sorts of answers, depending on how I think of it. For games I've owned for a while, but haven't spent any serious effort playing, that would have to go to the Ultima Collection's Ultima 1, 2 + 3 (purchased ~1998/1999?) I enjoyed the later games, but those one are just a bit too primitive for me. I made a half-hearted attempt at #1 at some point, but I think I only managed to clear one dungeon. Final Fantasy 1 (NES, grabbed around 2003) is in a similar boat, as I never really played beyond getting the ship Finished the GBA version though. For some reason, the original version of the game intimidates me. I have plenty of games that I've enjoyed but never finished though, similar to your listing. Usually the game just gets too hard at a certain point, so I put it down. These games I've made significant inroads into, and I'm okay with not finishing. Stuff like: Dungeon Keeper/Dungeon Keeper 2Age of Wonders (lost my save too ) Mechwarrior 2: Ghost Bear LegacyStar Craft: Brood WarI guess I'm not cut out for some strategy/sim games, huh? If we're going strictly by age of game, I recently picked up Spindizzy for the Commodore 64 (1986), but haven't played it much yet. Similarly, I picked up the Zork collection for GC9x a while ago. Played through Zork 1, but haven't touched the others.

There's probably too many to count. With games as a whole being so cheap and accessible nowadays, you can just amass a huge collection of stuff you'll barely (or never) play.
As far as right now...I was mostly through a run of Chrono Trigger that I completely dropped once a friend of mine let me borrow his copy of MGS V and uh, that's taking up a lot of my time - I can't remember the last time I neglected sleep and hygiene for a video game.

Oldest game chronologically that I intend to try at some point...maybe: Oubliette (either the DOS version or the mobile port, not sure yet)
The one I've owned for the longest time and still haven't tried: It's either Alpha Protocol or Drakensang: River of Time (due to lacking a working CD drive at the time of this post, among other reasons)

Might and Magic VI. I got it on release in '98, but I've never finished it. I lost my original saves in a hard drive crash and I was pretty far. I tried replaying it a year or two ago and got a ways into it before losing interest.

Hey, do any emulated roms count? I have some Atari, Namco, and Taito games for MAME from the late 1970's.

The original Ninja Turtles game for NES. Had it for 20 years and haven't beat it yet.

Probably Mother 1 aka Earthbound Beginnings, got it because I was excited that Nintendo finally rereleased the game's cancelled English version on Wii U and been meaning to play it.
But oldest retro game I own the physical copy of probably Soul Blazer on SNES.

I've had various GB games since 1997-1998, which should be the oldest. Probably the only one I've not yet beaten of that batch is Mystic Quest (AKA Final Fantasy Adventure). I've been meaning to get it.

Most of my NES games I’ve had since I was a kid. So Metroid I guess, I remember seeing it beaten, though it could have been the babysitter who did it. I think I had a lot of my NES games endings shown to me by other persons. I certainly remember the Legend Of Zelda being the same case as Metroid.
So I’ve had some of these games in my “backlog” for close to thirty years?

while it's unlikely to be a game I go back to any time soon, for me it'd be Shadow Hearts: The New World. I got half way through and never finished the game. Not sure why I stopped playing.
