phediuk's thread about longest campaigns made me wonder something I've thought about before: which game has the longest distinct gameplay segment, like a stage or a dungeon? Without being a single-segment game, of course. I'm not talking about long sidequests, either, I mean specific canned segments, distinct from the rest of the game. In terms of dungeons, the 2D versions of Final Fantasy IV: The After Years have a real monster of a final dungeon, spanning two entire episodes of the original cell phone release. I'm looking at a PSP first-time let's play right now where the dungeon takes up maybe a quarter of the entire playthrough! I'm not going to count up his time over fifty videos, but estimating 10 minutes a video, it takes him at least 8 hours to clear the dungeon. The dungeon was shrunk in the 3D remakes to get rid of new enemies they didn't want to model in 3D, but it's hard to say how much. I checked a longplay where it only chewed up a fifth of the game instead of a quarter, but for all I know, that might have been an experienced run instead of a first-time run. That's off the top of my head, but I'm sure people can come up with better.

Isn't the final dungeon portion of the original NES Final Fantasy III also super long? Hell, JRPGs during that era LOVED to pull that shit in general; no saves and all.
Also, the last level of Metal Slug 3 is pretty much a third of the full game. Nowhere near as impressive as the Final Fantasy one in terms of time it takes to complete, but as far as genre standards go, it's massive.
On the same token, King 2 from Mega Man & Bass is pretty much three stages worth' of obstacles and bosses (four in total!) in one, which is pretty damn much for a Mega Man game.

Demise: Rise of the Ku'tan is, I believe, the objective and undisputed champ for level length. The whole game is one seamless dungeon (no loading zones anywhere) consisting of 30 absolutely gigantic floors, between which you can and will fall down or be teleported at the game's mercy. That is one floor of the dungeon, and there's 30 of them. Estimates for completing the game are in the hundreds of hours. I believe this is a couple of orders of magnitude ahead of any possible competition for this thread.

I got to say the longest mission that i can play at: "In for a pound" in Team Buddies (PS1) It doesn't have time limit, but player's seriously outnumbered (1 buddy Vs. 3 teams) As you're the stealthy which has permanent invisibility and ability to steal weapon from enemy via melee You have to sneak enemy territory for weapon and tank. With stolen tank you have to get rid of enemy's stealthies (so they're replaced with visible buddy) and enemy's base (so they can't constructing anything anymore) Waiting for enemy to build tank is certainly takes long time. So you have to be patience

The last dungeon in FF3 is a marathon ball-buster, for sure.
The last dungeon in Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga is nearly as bad, but at least have save points. They don't have any for the last several floors, however. I eventually started running away from enemies to keep my party as fresh as possible for the last battle.

When it comes to side scrollers Metal Slug 3's final level take the cake as far as I've experienced. Much to many peoples chargin which I understand. But I still love it even if mostly just for how audacious it is haha.

Fantasy Explorer Nitroid! comes to mind in terms of likely playtime. Its bonus world (the gameplay loop is like a metroidvania split up into chunks, each world is made up of several interconnected rooms) is not only sprawling but also incredibly difficult. In raocow's Let's Play, more than half of the 76 videos were spent in that world.
The game boy Mega Man games have very long final levels, but they have lots of checkpoints even for if you game over, so the player isn't as fatigued.
The Silver Case and killer7 are also probably notable here for having huge meaty Cases, Reports and Targets, although they won't beat any records or anything, they just serve to make the story semi-episodic.

I can remember Crystal Man in GB MMIV also having a very long level. Dust Man's sure feels long, but that's more due to the difficulty. Also, if you count Ancient Cave as one level, that one's gotta be up there.

Act of Aggression's final mission for Chimera can easily take more than two hours.
The second mission in the Founding for Durator campaign in Warcraft III can take four to five hours.
The final mission The Forgotten Land/Gwangeto the Great took me about three hours.

Solomon Shrine in Ys 2 is at least a 2 hour long dungeon, because you have to backtrack 20 or so times and do lots of grinding. That dungeon can make you fall asleep. I know Halo games have some really long levels, but the only one I can think of is "Shutdown" in Halo 4.
