There's a Kickstarter trailer for a new game called Hellscreen (EDIT: Remembered to actually put the video link in) that boasts a similarly striking art-style. That looks kind of like a better version of Devil's Daggers. Didn't really like that one, but I like the idea of surviving and upgrading yourself in an FPS. Looks like the Kickstarter isn't going that well, though.

I just want a return to some actual gods honest level design in FPS games. A lot of these retro throw backs are just arena shooters like Serious Sam but the only one that has worked was Doom, since it felt more like a cross between a FPS and a character action game. Even at that these supposed retro arena shooters don't even feel retro as there were no arena shooters back then. Don't know about AMID EVIL but Ion Maiden and DUSK have honest level design and are not arena shooters, like i said above, you can end any level in DUSK without even killing one single enemy which gives you the ranking of pacifist(rankings are only given to some more spectacular ways of ending a level, like killing every enemy and finding every secret will give you the ranking of "completionist" at the end of a level) at the end of each level, even the bosses can be skipped if you manage to dodge their attacks and open the exit without dying. Ion Maiden and DUSK just have big levels with secrets and enemies in some areas, but you aren't locked in one area and can run away to get more health, ammo or just plain run away, these are not arena shooters, you are not trapped through locked doors or invisible walls and forced to kill a variety of enemies before being allowed to proceed, hell, like i said, DUSK allows you to not even beat the bosses(which is great for speedrunners and challenge gamers i guess) so it certainly isn't Serious Sam. I can confirm that AMID EVIL is yet another old-school throwback with legitimately old-school level design. That's the reason I made this thread - because DUSK, Ion Maiden and AMID EVIL just get it, and they don't just cherry pick the bits they liked, throw out the rest and then lay claim to 'hey, look! RETRO' There's a Kickstarter trailer for a new game called Hellscreen (EDIT: Remembered to actually put the video link in) that boasts a similarly striking art-style. That looks kind of like a better version of Devil's Daggers. Didn't really like that one, but I like the idea of surviving and upgrading yourself in an FPS. Looks like the Kickstarter isn't going that well, though. Yeah, the creators have expressed regret in showing off some of the larger rooms in the trailer, because it does make it look just like Devil Daggers. There's real levels in here, at least according to them. I hope that's the case, because the game looks pretty nice, otherwise. backgroundnoise - thanks for the clarification! I'll be avoiding that one then

Hellbound could be another game you're looking for here, as for myself - i'll probably stick with Witchfire or Scorn or something like RetroBlazer(hard to say, will it ever happen tho).

Played a bit more of Ion Maiden, the armor shards are really more noticeable, the game is running alot better and i swear that the SMG seems even better than before, besides that, the preview campaign continues to be really damn impressive and fun to play, and as a new playthrough requires, i looked around a bit more trying to find secrets and ended up finding this: Yep, this really is like the good old classic Build games, also, just a tip, but continuing to walk rewards you like finding secrets usually does: God, i can't wait for the full game to be released, everything about the preview campaign is so great and so promising that it makes me hope that the game can really live up to the hype.

Still have a ton of secrets to find but found some more, this one looks like a reference to something: Though i don't know what it is, i heard there is some kind of Twin Peaks reference, but i am ashamed to say i am one of those people who has never seen the show, either that or it's a reference to something obvious that is just not coming to mind right now. There is a clothing store near the boss area and one of the outfits for sale is quite familiar: Since the game is set in the future and Duke Nukem has written books about how great he is and was quite famous in his timeline, does this mean that in the future, Duke's costume is for sale as a sort of tribute or way for men to feel badass emulating one of history's badasses? Probably just a reference to Duke and the fact that Bombshell, the game the main character hails from, was originally a Duke Nukem game before being changed...but i like the idea that Ion Maiden happens in the future of the Duke Nukem games honestly. Oh, and the last secret i found(still many to find) has this little message: Nothing much, just liked seeing this, even more so because it's a secret area, so you only see it if you play like a typical retro FPS player, by looking at whatever looks suspicious and see if it's a secret, or go out of your way to look for them, people who just blaze through the preview campaign will completely miss this message, i don't know, just felt like a way of thanking people in a way that is appropriate for people that like this kind of FPS.

Yeah, I've found a TON of really cool secrets - they've all got awesome little messages like that in there, and I love it. I mean, I know there's not *too much* content in the Early Access, but I can't remember the last time I've gone back again and again just searching for things I might have missed.
I really think that the game will live up to expectations. My only worry is that it's going to be too short. I mean, I'd rather have a killer shorter experience than a long, drawn-out one with padding, for sure. 6-8 hours would be awesome... 8-10 hours would be perfect.

I think that this is actually the second revival of retro FPS games. The first revival was games like Rise of the Triad remake, Shadow Warrior Reboot and Call of Juarez:Gunslinger. There were also hidden gems like Gun Commando for PS Mobile.

Really, Ion Maiden...really? With Shelly even commenting that she was promised cake, welp, it's 2018 and the Portal memes are still alive, it seems! Oh yeah, there were some goodies in there since it's a secret and all, but i took them before i though of taking some screenshots so it's not just a companion cube and cake in the room, but yeah, between that weird pillar i found that i am still not sure what it's a reference to and this, i think it's safe to say that Ion Maiden will keep the tradition of referencing pop culture and other games, sometimes in really blatant ways.

I really want to get these games. I was an absolute FPS nut during the heyday but modern FPS games don't do much for me.

I really want to get these games. I was an absolute FPS nut during the heyday but modern FPS games don't do much for me. Then you'll be wanting to get on them sooner rather than later. This was exactly me - I loooooved FPS games back then, and devoured every one I was able to get my hands on. Ion Maiden, DUSK and AMID EVIL have brought that feeling back for me, and going by the Steam ratings, everybody else. The fact they're all legitimately great games, and not just knock-off's makes them even better. And they're not even done yet. I have to admit Amid Evil is more magical than Heretic The devs deserve a glorious medal Yeah, it's pretty damned special. They've already implemented a whole slew of fan-suggestions. For instance, when the Axe is in power mode, it will propel you through water. Why? "Just because." Love it!

Anyways, decided to buy AMID Evil to support the game and it's actually fun, seeing videos and screenshots didn't make me happy with the art style and HUD but playing the game i don't even notice it and think it actually looks appropriate now, also find the game more fun than DUSK already, but maybe that has to do with i liking the fantasy theme more and the game being less dark, since i don't like the darker areas and parts of DUSK.
Also, i got a staff that apparently blows up planets, i didn't even notice it, but while i was using the staff and throwing orbs at the Moon Guardian, i got a message about how i blew up Earth and got the achievement "Armageddon", apparently the staff pulls planets from space, shrinks them into orbs and throws them at enemies, and it's not even the most powerful weapon in the game!

silentstorm Congrats! Yeah, after I finished AMID EVIL, I came to the same conclusion. I like the darkness of DUSK, but I'm a sucker for colour in my games, the brighter and more saturated the better, and AMID EVIL has it in spades. I also prefer the weapon-set, it's just plain cool, haha! Relevant video: DF Retro did an extra video thingy, and interviewed Frederik Schreiber of 3DRealms Evan Ramos of Voidpoint about Ion Maiden - there's some really neat tech-talk in the video. You might want a coffee or something though, it goes for 40-odd minutes. Great watch though!

Here's another one - Project Warlock. It looks more like Wolf 3D or Rise of the Triad, but the art-style is nice enough, and the animations on the enemy sprites look pretty neat! EDIT: The bloke creating it is only 19 - impressive!
