Oh no, I don't think there's anything wrong with the concept, but it lends itself very easily to abuse. Errrr, what?

Okay, here's something that I'm actually embarrassed to admit: I get very bad gamer rage, even now in my thirties. It's a shamefully regular occurrence for me to spontaneously scream and curse at the TV or punch a wall so hard I actually hurt my knuckles. It was enough to make my ex-GF so upset that I had to limit gaming when she was around. Note that this doesn't happen with every game or even every hard game, there has to be a feeling of unfairness or being cheated to set me off. I can die multiple time in Souls games or roguelikes and just get mildly annoyed, but playing against the AI in TTT2, Magic Duels or most racing games has me immediately on the edge. Oh, I've had my share of this. I tend to get at least a bit agitated at minor annoyances in most games, but there's a few instances where I became so angry at a game I turned it off in a rage, threw the game aside and quite. Only to immediately start it up again. It's the kind of pissed off where it's impairing your playing, only making it worse. Strangely enough the worst times I had this was with Mario games. Mario Sunshine has one absolutely BS secret stage that not only is unfair and annoying, but it also takes ages to get to when you get a game over. And Super Mario Kart's final cup on the hardest difficulty requires you to drive 5 difficult tracks absolutely flawlessly (one mistake and you can forget about 1st place) against cheap AI that either bombard you with items or don't let you pass with their infinite starmen.

Oh god, the secret stages in SMB Shunshine. I even had to do them twice because my little brother accidentally erased my save.

Well, he was only about seven at the time. He also managed to delete my 80% done Wind Waker save, but didn't really mind that since it just gave me the excuse to play it all over again.

You seem like a pretty laid back kind of guy, which is great. I've held grudges for 25 years over far less.

Possible, but people always try to make Rockstar games out to be a debauchery trainer for children. I think it was more that the mainstream just didn't give a shit about playing as a kid compared to dealing drugs and killing innocent people. Lets not forget State of Emergency. What a shit show that was. I finally briefly played State of Emergency after skipping it for 14 years because I was curious. And yeah, it sucks, the arcade like chaos mode is fun for a brief amount of time but gets old fast and the mission based mode is simply awful. Lets not forget State of Emergency. What a shit show that was. Oh damn, yeah. Between that and Manhunt, Rockstar really filled their "look how edgy and cool I am" phase. Believe it or not, I think Manhunt is actually a really underrated game, if you can look past the violence it's a solid stealth game with an appropriately nightmarish and scary feel. Plus it anticipates later "stealth horror" games like The Last of Us and The Evil Within. The sequel is not so hot but not totally terrible either.

I've definitely raged over the years at a number of different games. I try not to get too embarrassing. I mean, isn't it lame to flip out and swear at an Animal Crossing game just because you missed a valuable fish or bug? Or because you got ripped off by Satan -- er, I mean, Crazy Redd? The thing is, am I truly angry at the games themselves, or is it something else and games just give me an excuse to rage? I blur the line sometimes.

Kid Kool is a good game. It's a frustrating game, but it's a good game.

I used to cry when games would frustrate me. At least my parents thought it was funny! I had a close gaming buddy who was more of the angry rager, and he stuck with gaming a lot later than I did. Honestly - breaking his own controllers and game discs, starting fights even... Not to sound like a new-ager, but that is some bad energy and really something that I don't want to have associated with gaming as a pastime.

Interesting, I never would have thought to compare Manhunt with those games. It makes sense though. I thought Manhunt 2 was mediocre at best, but have heard the first is better, so I may give that a go sometime.

I will never understand why people throw controllers or break discs or whatever. You're just costing yourself more money (not to mention needlessly frightening the people around you).

I will never understand why people throw controllers or break discs or whatever. You're just costing yourself more money (not to mention needlessly frightening the people around you). Serious talk here- Why do people punch walls, or swear, or tell some random person on XBL about things that you may have done with their mother? It's all unhealthy behavior. People who get angry and destructive are lacking in negative feedback on such behavior (if you ask me). I mean, after moving away from gaming and asking him, the only answer he could give me was "I don't know, I just do it". That's addictive behavior.
I dunno man - people invest a lot into gaming, and it shows in their behavior. Since leaving the scene, I've learned to lighten up and laugh a lot more.
Every so often, I'll fire up one of my old turn-based games to kill some time, and man if that RNG doesn't get me fired up when it dicks me over. It's totally human (I think) to react to that kind of thing when you've invested even only time in it.
How each person expresses that frustration is really up to the individual, i guess. something like breaking your own controller or disc really amounts to self harm.
