Here's the press release by Atari Corp. when they announce that the system would be distributed in Japan by Mumin Corp. FULL DISCLOSURE: The date this was released DOES NOT means it was released that month! I'll put the full text here just in case this get lost in time... - Atari Jaguar stalks JapanSUNNYVALE, Calif.--Nov. 21, 1994--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Atari Corp. Monday announced that the Atari Jaguar, the world's only 64-bit video game system, will now be available at all 25 Toys "R" Us stores and other selected stores in Japan. Mumin Corp. of Tokyo will handle distribution and sales. Japanese consumers will be able to test-drive the Atari Jaguar Interactive Multimedia System at special demonstration kiosks in Toys "R" Us stores. "The Japanese are very serious about their video game systems, and they will choose the system with the best graphics and most sophisticated playing environment," said Sam Tramiel, chief executive officer of Atari Corp. "We think that if they are given the chance to compare, Japanese gamers will choose Atari Jaguar." The launch in Japan marks another significant milestone in building worldwide distribution for the Atari Jaguar system. Introduced in October of last year, the Jaguar was only available in New York and San Francisco during last year's important holiday shopping season. Today, the Jaguar is available throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and, now, Japan. "We have the best game system in the business, hit games like Alien Vs. Predator and the soon-to-be-released Doom, and we are expanding our distribution," Tramiel added. "The momentum for Jaguar is building every day." Since its release in November 1993, Atari's Jaguar game system has been named the industry's "Best New Game System" (Video Games Magazine), "Best New Hardware System" (Game Informer) and "1993 Technical Achievement of the Year" (DieHard GameFan). Atari Corp. markets interactive multimedia entertainment systems, including Jaguar, the world's only 64-bit game system, and the only video game system manufactured in the United States. Here's a Famitsu article from their June 16th, 1995 Issue (#339 - Pg.8), showing that the Jaguar, with shipment data for FY ending March '94 and '95. The Jaguar didn't sell really well as far as this image shows (2000 units so far) but it's not the only magazine that covered the Jaguar in Japan, which you'll see in future posts...Benjamins Stevens of Planet Virtual Boy is the awesome man who scanned these images so props to him

Here's an interesting piece of information by John Szczepaniak at Gamasutra with Satoshi Nakai, which mentions that he played not only the Jaguar but also the Lynx (which was also released in japan)... Satoshi Nakai developing art for InvaderGames in Italy - JS: What are your future plans?
- SN: Games sure come in a lot of different forms these days. We have PC games, browser-based games, games for home consoles, mobile and smartphones. Times change, and these things ebb and flow. I remember the Jaguar. That thing sure had a weird controller! I remember the Lynx. And I couldn't believe how expensive it was! The hardware comes and goes but the games stick around. It's just like how "chiptune" music is still popular in this day and age. I'm sure all sorts of things will continue to change, but I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that digital games have already become as established as card games and board games. And that means I can still keep drawing my digital art!

Just by reading about this briefly, it didn't seem like they bothered to localize the games into Japanese at all? Like they just shipped American games there and called it a day.

Just by reading about this briefly, it didn't seem like they bothered to localize the games into Japanese at all? Like they just shipped American games there and called it a day. Basically...EXCEPT that some of the japanese releases came with a dedicated manual in that language (which i'll find pictures of them BTW). There's actually a very small but extremely harcore community to the system in the region if you check Twitter by searching the system's japanese name on the search bar and you'll be surprised My god man, are you like the world's leading expert on the Jaguar or what? No XD i don't proclaim myself to be a leading Jag expert but i really love the system a lot. Hands down, one of my favorite Atari systems, even with its flaws.

- By dilinger: Cybermorph
- By Lod Innit: Trevor McFur in the Crescent Galaxy and Club Drive
- Another look at the JPN Doom Package by Walter_J64bit. Nearly identical except the manual:
And the thing that, IMHO, hurted the most to occidental Jag fans...Alien vs Predator was the pack-in title instead of Cybermorph (BTW, the Jaguar was released on December 8, 1994) Pic by Zerosquare

Chalk me up as another one who unironically likes the Jaguar. Despite its many flaws with its buggy hardware, awful controller and poor 1st & 3rd party support, there were some genuine diamonds like Tempest 2000, Super Burnout, Power Drive Rally, Iron Soldier and good versions of Doom, Wolfenstein, Rayman and Raiden. Also to my knowledge, its basically the last console to have been developed in Britain, following the Amstrad GX4000 and the failed Konix Multisystem. And the thing that, IMHO, hurted the most to occidental Jag fans...Alien vs Predator was the pack-in title instead of Cybermorph Should have picked Raiden, Iron Soldier or Doom instead.

I can also add Attack of the Mutant Penguins, Missile Command 3D, Defender 2000, Ruiner Pinball, NBA Jam T.E. (i'm friend of the programmer of the conversion actually! He did it in 4 grueling months of non-stopping work, porting the 100.000+ lines of assembly code from the arcade to the Jag.), Iron Soldier, Atari Karts, Ultra Vortek, Val d'Isère Skiing and Snowboarding, Zool 2 & Zero 5 especially to that list of good games
