Two issues. The Blu Ray drives were bad quality. And the GPU would overheat and the solder would come away from the board, same issue that the 360 had. PS3 is just as bad just PS3 consoles tend to last a little longer. You can fix it by getting the solder reballed (basically replace the crap lead free environmentally friendly solder with some good old fashioned and strong leaded solder). Some people fixed it be reflowing the solder, basically melting the solder already there and letting it set but you were extending the life of the system by a 2-6 months.
Hard to find a place to reball solder now.
