- the core gampeplay mostly consists of you having to stare at the rather tiny radar window
If you play on lower difficulty settings, then it's like this. But on higher difficulties you must resort to observation of the actual environment (more often than not in first person view). And MGS3 completely ditches the radar in favor of motion detectors and such. I know. But using first person mode is a bit cumbersome in the original (it's a bit better on the PC, since you can actually move freely). And yes, later games like MGS2 or Twin Snakes give the player more fun to use first person modes and other valid options to play the game.

So does that mean I'm oligated to like it? Last I checked, the thread was titled "games that are slightly overrated", not "games I don't enjoy all that much".

The last time I checked, the thread was described like this:
"this topic is to talk about games that are held up as masterpieces but which you personally found at best, fun diversions but little more.... but they're not outright bad, they just aren't as good as the hype makes out."
Emphasis on the word "personally"..
And maybe you've also noticed that I've actually taken the time to explain in detail why I feel that way. So are we good, or what?

Personally I used to like Tetris until I discovered Puyo Puyo [shots fired]. Though, then I heard about Tetris: The Grand Master... it made Tetris fun again.

Personally I used to like Tetris until I discovered Puyo Puyo [shots fired]. I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but I tend to prefer puzzle games with a more elaborate presentation and the ability to do combos is also a plus in my book. So Puyo Puyo is somewhat more appealing to me than regular Tetris. A personal favorite is Kirby's Star Stacker (or Kirby no KiraKira Kids). Probably not the deepest nor the most challenging game (once you've figured out a few general strategies), but it feels pretty satisfying to do large combos accompanied by those sweet Kirby jingles.
Tetris Effect on the other hand does look intriguing. I doubt it will change my mind completely, since underneath the fantastic presentation it still remains Tetris, but as a Rez fan I'd like to try it. Too bad I don't do VR nor any current gen console..

Though, then I heard about Tetris: The Grand Master... it made Tetris fun again. I don't think I've ever played that one. What does it do differently? Blows peoples minds and summons the Great Old OnesMore seriously... it rebalances Tetris to be more competitive in an arcade setting. If you start a fresh game in MAME (there was never a home port), at first you might not notice a difference, because a lot of them are under-the-hood rule optimizations. For example in older Tetris games its possible to get the Z-blocks (that's what I call them, anyway) one after another, which basically forces a gap. TGM actually makes this impossible, reducing the "screw you" factor. It's at high level play though that TGM becomes what its most known for... Tetris for crazy people. Crazy, awesome people. EDITSooo... I just remembered another one, so bringing this topic back on track. I'm probably gonna get flayed for this, so let me make one thing clear: I absolutely love Devil May Cry 3The "slightly overrated" part is that I don't see it as the best game in the series. Devil May Cry was a lot like Metal Gear Solid for me--I got into both franchises after their heyday (in fact, I got into both around 2010 or so, during a period where I was rediscovering the PS2 library), after having heard about the controversies, and when I played through them I largely came away thinking fans were overreacting. Seriously, screw gaming fans: Metal Gear Solid 2 is the best game in the series, Raiden being the new main character would've been the perfect direction since he didn't have all of Solid Snake's baggage, and that fans rejected it and Kojima wound up bending over backwards to suck up to fanboys (to be fair to Kojima, he WAS getting death threats) is one of the greatest tragedies ever. I swear, if Lord of the Rings were written today, fans would bitch that it doesn't star Bilbo Baggins. But this was about Devil May Cry. To me, the original DMC is the best game in the series (note: I never played DMC4 or the reboot). I'll gladly agree with most fans that DMC2 was a bit of a letdown. I didn't hate it, but it wasn't as good. My main problem with DMC3 is that it felt too much like an over-reaction. Fans complained that Dante was "too emo" and "not badass enough" in DMC2 (which proves how dumb fans are because that's like saying a rainbow isn't colorful enough, by the way)... DMC3 responds by making him this over-the-top cocky little git and being just FULL of cutscenes which are just showing off how awesome he is. Honestly one thing I liked about the series up to this point was the minimal-but-still-advancing story. It managed to get across everything in very straightforward cutscenes that served their purpose then let you play the damn game. DMC3's cutscenes got so annoying I actually started skipping them even on my first playthrough (it helps that the game lets you watch them again later). They were too numerous and served only to show you battles you could be playing instead. Fans complained about... plot direction I guess, because like Snake Eater (which itself is a game I find overrated) DMC3 decides to be a prequel, thus leaving DMC2 with a cliffhanger that never gets resolved. So basically.. DMC3 is good if you ignore the story or watch only the more interesting cutscenes and don't mind that Dante is kind of a jerk. Really.... yeah, the main thing about DMC3 for me is I just don't like the presentation of the story. I do have some gripes with the gameplay (not a huge fan of the "can only equip two weapons at a time" thing) and the music and atmosphere... both being more reasons I liked DMC1 more... but the narrative is the major issue. I still need to play DMC4 sometime tho.

I'm gonna say the New Super Mario Brothers series, excluding U. New Super Mario Bros DS, is the game that made me purchase a DS, the day it released I purchased the console and game. I played it, finished it eventually and have never touched it since. The Wii one I didn't even finish. I maybe jaded but they just lack whatever made the older 2d marios so much fun to play and play again, these were fun but they felt like they could've been made by anyone, lacking that 'Nintendo magic'. And the music sucked. U on the other hand completely felt like an older title, I went back and found new things, just played for fun with no real purpose other than to play. It still had the New Super Mario music, but I could overlook this! Haven't played the 3ds one though!

Find myself agreeing with just about everything here.

Found the DS NSMB really phoned in. It just didn't have the imagination of mosteoporosis Nintendo platforms. I loved Wii and U though.
I'd say Last of Us is slightly over rated. The game play isn't anything special. And the story while good is the video game equivalent of Oscar bait. And the whole they aren't zombies argument is rubbish. It's good but it's hardly Silent Hill 2 or Tactics Ogre.
Also found the celebrated surgery scene plain bad game design rather than genius. All you can do is what the developer wants and I found Spec Ops did similar scenes but better.
I enjoyed it but it's no where near best game ever material.

I give DS NSMB some slack because it did give us original boss fights and it was designed to rebuild the classic formula. Multiplayer aside, that series became too uniform and safe.

I actually haven't played Undertale, though I've seen videos and one part of a Lets Play on it. The only problem I have is that its one of those cases where everyone was into it so I wound up knowing everything about it without actually playing it.

I like the NSMB games. The DS one is pretty much a continuation of SMB3/SMW. It doesn't have that many groundbreaking things, but it's got enough if you consider it's the first 2D Mario in ages. Wii and U came out too close to each other, but taken on their own merits, they're both really solid and great multiplayer games. NSMB2 is pretty unnecessary and probably the worst mainline Mario. But I get that they wanted a 2D Mario game out for 3DS. I'm gonna say the New Super Mario Brothers series, excluding U. New Super Mario Bros DS, is the game that made me purchase a DS, the day it released I purchased the console and game. I played it, finished it eventually and have never touched it since. It still had the New Super Mario music, but I could overlook this! Haven't played the 3ds one though! I'm kind of surprised you feel that way since Wii and U are really similar in most ways. I'd say that if you like U you might want to give Wii another try.

The game does work best when you're able to play through and kind of discover it organically. Like I knew going into it that you didn't have to kill everyone but that's about it. I didn't know any of what happens when you play through it a second time or just how much it plays around with and circumvents RPG conventions.

NSMB as a series is weird. On paper I should love them, but I find them incredibly dull, from the level design to the graphics to the music. I'll admit the Wii version with multiplayer is a lot of fun.
I've played through the "classic" Marios dozens of times at this point. I played Mario 3 on a plane ride on my Switch yesterday and had a blast. I played through Wii NSMB once and it was a struggle to finish the whole thing. I'm not sure if these older games are just objectively better or if I'm just more prone to retreat into a game that's safe and familiar.
FWIW, World is probably my favorite Mario game as far as gameplay and aesthetics. Nintendo could release an official ROM hack of that game with a new set of levels and I'd gladly pay full price for it.
