There are many examples of radical changes from Japan to Eu/Us versions of games (like Raw Danger!), but this is probably the most peculiar US vs EU change i've seen. From: www.speldesign.se/usa-vs-eu/From: tcrf.net/ExterminationPal voice acting: Us voice acting:

It's very unusual, since games barely ever get released in Europe before North America and if not are generally based on them, but it happens every once in a blue moon. The European versions of La Pucelle Tactics and Fire Emblem: Awakening are also based on the uncencored JP-version instead of having the same changes as the NA one for example, IIRC. There are other similar cases of differences, like EU-PS2 Final Fantasy X being based on the upgraded International version instead of vanilla FFX like in the US, this time precisely because we had to wait so long for it.

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is another game with two English scripts, one each for NA and PAL.

Extermination is a game I'd like to play one day. Silly to change his haircut, like sort-of long hair is just unthinkable, but I guess the US version does look more like a generic videogame marine / special ops soldier dude.

Extermination isn't very good, unfortunately. It's basically Resident Evil plus The Thing with clumsy gameplay. The game wants you fight enemies and you get unlimited free ammo, but the controls coupled with the infection mechanic and the fact that enemies are bullet sponges make it a huge pain. It's often better to just cheese it or just run past them.

I've played a demo and sadly it's not very good. While I love PS2 survival horror games and Extermination is one of the few I haven't played to completion, it's just not much fun, it feels awkward even by the standards of survival horror and the environments are totally generic (at least from what I played in the demo, the whole game doesn't seem like it'd be much different though) I wouldn't count it out as a "rainy day" game but it's not something I see as a high priority or a must play, maybe one day though. The graphics are pretty groovy however, looks like an arcade game from the late 90s/early 2000s but it's a console game, I love that type of graphical style.

I expect the focus to be on the story, though. It was written and directed by Yuzo Sugano, who wrote Sega's Deep Fear a few years before. Not a great game, gameplay-wise, but a decent, fast-moving, movie-inspired story in the Leviathan/The Abyss/Alien mode. I don't regret playing it, ultimately, even if it was a letdown after Resident Evil 1 & 2.

Playing just about everything on PS2 is a bucket list thing for me, so chances are I'll get around to Extermination eventually.

I played Extermination. Rented it and beat it in a week. It was pretty mediocre but I didn't hate it.
