There are some game sound effects that are so popular that pretty much everyone knows or recognizes: Sonic's rings, Mario's coins, Pac-Man's gobbling noise, Metal Slug's announcer... What do you think are some of the most interesting and memorable sound effects from games, the ones that are stuck in your head or instantly remind you of a particular game? For example, Arkanoid is almost totally silent so the sound of the ball's rebound against blocks and walls easily gets memorized.
Keep in mind that "memorable" doesn't necessarily mean "good", maybe the FX are stuck in your head for the wrong reasons... For example I always despised Mega Man's energy refilling "REEEEEEE" sound, I find it horribly grating and still had to endure it in all classic MM games. Another example could be the weird "BYUURRGH" noise the bosses in Three Wonders' "Chariot" make when hit, or the infamous belching nurses from Silent Hill 4. Save points, bonus items, death jingles, "insert credit" effects, explosions, everything is fine, let's see what you got!

I love the sound when you pick up a power up in the original Super Mario Bros. One of the first things I noticed when I played the All Stars version was how hollow it sounded in comparison.

Castlevania, the life refill sound effect, when you grab meat that's been hiding behind some whipped blocks.
Rygar. Enemy destruction. Sounds quite explosive.
Double Dragon, sound of an enemy falling to the ground.
River City Ransom. When an enemy bites it, or goes "barf!"
Duck Hunt. Dog laugh when you completely miss.
Final Fantasy IV - black magic spell cast.
Ys Book 1 and 2 - Treasure/item received.
Metal Gear Solid - !!

The Konami pause sound effect, as heard in their NES/Famicom games, their MSX games (not sure of the other home computers), their SNES games, and some of their Sega Genesis games.
A shame the Playstation and beyond never had it. Wouldn't you have liked to have heard a newer version in the Metal Gear Solid games?

How about the low health beeping sound in Zelda and Kingdom Hearts?
I also really like the the power jingle and insert coin sound in Neo-Geo games.

Top Gun on NES. Just about every sound effect. From launching missiles, hitting targets, to blowing up or getting the refueling linked up. Konami had fantastic sound effect work overall.
Think of all the sound effects on Contra. The deaths. Making small damage. Actually blowing stuff up. Power-up. Just masterful stuff.
Loved the Neo Geo sounds too!

I love the sound when you pick up a power up in the original Super Mario Bros. Did you know it's really just the end-of-level theme, but sped up?

In Final Fantasy IV, the Virus spell had the best spell sound effect. (the SNES, I do not know if Square-Enix has ruined its greatness in the remakes/ports. Likely.)

The Revenge of Shinobi sfx are pretty impressive, being all fm & psg generated.
The overall soundscape in a lot of MD games tended to have something missing, whether it was grating sfx or music or both, so the good ones stand out there. SoR, Alien Soldier, Sonic, Chiki Chiki Boys, Technosoft and Sakimoto games, Mega Turrican, Panorama Cotton, Sunsoft games, Batman & Robin, McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure, Combat Cars. And for the fm sfx only I really like the Monster World games and Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster’s Hidden Treasure as well.
I'm also partial towards some mid 90s PC game sfx; they tended to be punchy and gritty with some downsampling on them, making the interaction more satisfying. Warcraft 2, Quake, Red Alert, Heroes 2-3, Strife, Cannon Fodder, Exhumed etc.

Health refill stations in Half-Life. Still stuck in my head.

I 'll add a couple more: Golden Axe's dying enemies, that "OH GAWD!" soundbite that was sampled from a Rambo movie IIRC.
For a bad example, the insert coin sound from Nastar: a reverbering woman voice saying "Yes we do". What?!? Just another example of how monumentally stupid that game was.

-footsteps in Digital Devil Saga
-the gunshots of Raidou Kuzunoha in SMT III: Nocturne -"fistpunch" in SMT III: Nocturne -I have the sound in my head, but there is a sound in Suda51 game that I always remember, it sounds something between 8 bit and 16 bit. (I think from No More Heroes) -the scream of Axel as well as Blaze in the Streets of Rage series, i guess this is grey area, but I don't know, if this would count as sound effects or voices. I guess, it is a bit from both.
-when you are killed in Metal Gear Solid 1, people scream Snake and then you have that awesome jingle with the great sound effect. Sadly, the jingle from the sequels aren't that awesome. -that "BOING" in the old Super Mario games, when you jump very high through the device -Super Mario 2, there is a person that is spitting eggs, the spitting sound is memorable to me
-the tongue of yoshi has a memorable sound effect, sounds like "BLRRR"
-the menu sound effects in the Devil May Cry series -radio sound effect of Silent Hill 1 -if you open a chest in some Link games from Nintendo -this is now black humour, but red light of death from a ps3 -radio start sound effect in EDF 4.1 (from the scientists) -the sound effect, if you have the text "You found it" in "999" (the DS version, I don't know, if they changed it)
I am surprised that I don't remember bomb sound effects from some Nintendo games. I have nebulous memories about them, but thats it.
Yours sincerely

Golden Axe 2 (I think?)'s "Bleh!" from every single enemy including skeletons was also memorable, even if not in a good way.

I could list dozens and dozens, but my all-time favorite sound effect is the sound of kicking a Koopa shell in Super Mario Bros. The magic sound in DQ is a close second.
The baseball bat in Smash, the sounds Kremlins make when defeated in DKC, the sound of getting hit in Rayman 1 and any sound in DOOM are also good.
