LOVE (Switch, First Time)
An okay platformer with some good ideas but minimal execution. This was originally a PC title from 2012 that just made its first proper console debut. The description sounded promising with 16 levels. However they're very short as this is really a time attack game which isn't clear at all from the description. That's a shame because there's some fun elements, but they don't get used to their full potential. For $3, I can't complain too much but I very gladly would buy a full length sequel.
I finished in 21:00.6 by the timer.
Rating: 6 5
Edit: Dinging it an extra point because the description mentions a level creator that isn't even included!

Claiming Sylphia (PC Engine CD). First time.
This is by far the easiest shoot-'em-up I've ever played. It's pretty nice - fantasy setting, human character, a few interesting levels (the tower climb was my favorite) and the blue weapon is clever and fun to use (it shoots upwards + the opposite of the last direction you pressed, so with some practice, you can use it to fire anywhere). But it's so easy that you'll be done with it in an hour, and there's no real replay value. I played it again a second time afterwards and beat it on a single credit. For the record, I'm not good at shmups - I just started playing some last year, and this is I think only the 4th I finish. So that's how easy it is. I'd recommend it as a beginner's shooter, or to somebody who wants to play something old-school that isn't stressful.

Marvel's Spider-Man (PS4, first playthrough) - unknown playtime - 8/10 I can't believe this was actually good. This was kinda fighting an uphill battle with me as it's both a superhero game and an open world one which I like neither of (I've always been partial to spider-man though). It managed to overcome all of that and then some. I played this to 100% completion for the base game in a little over a week and I definitely felt like I could've played more if there was more to do. I don't know, it wasn't anything particularly new or unique but it did everything that it did do so well. There's been a lot of superhero games over the years that I've tried but none have nailed the feeling of actually Being a superhero like this one did. Add in stuff like the large variety of suits (catering to my enjoyment of playing dress up in video games ), the traversal, and even the characters/story for an all around good time. I'll definitely be here for the sequel to this on day one as long as it doesn't end up looking like trash.

Castlevania Legends (GameBoy, First Time)
Poor Sonia Belmont. She wasn't as robbed as Emma Skye in the Ace Attorney series, but her major outing was canceled and this one was written out of the timeline. The game itself is pretty good although it's lacking some of the gameplay elements of Belmont's Revenge. The one time per stage Burning Mode (invincibility + enhanced strength) makes every single boss barring Dracula a complete joke though. The game is ever so slightly less linear with selectable Soul Weapons (sub weapons) although this doesn't make up for the generally less varied gameplay.

Claiming Aleste Gaiden (MSX2). First time. I liked it. The action seems pretty sparse at first, and it's a bit slow, but it's not the kind of shooter where you're supposed to kill everything, necessarily; you just kill what you can and try to stay alive. There's a bit of platforming as it actually takes place on foot, and there are obstacles to avoid and gaps to jump over, but it's still not that far from a game like Elemental Master in terms of genre. It's got a nice post-apocalyptic setting, some really good music (some of which was taken from Compile's own Golvellius games, but not all), and it's not too hard as you've got infinite credits (though the levels are pretty long, the checkpoints rare, and you can only take one hit before you die). The bosses, interestingly, don't constitute the roadblocks they sometimes do in old-school action games; their patterns are usually pretty simple and straightforward, but they're still decent fun. It's not a mind-blowing game or anything, but it is pretty good. BTW, wyrdwad or any other MSX afficionado: can you confirm if it's true that this game never got an official stand-alone release? I know it was included in one of the Compile Disc Station Special packages, along with Children of Wars and Thexder, but I've also found this cover art. Is it legit?

'Fraid I don't know enough about the game to say, but I've got a couple friends who know Compile super-well, so I can ask them if you're curious.

It's the second Compile shooter I play in a row, and I already want to play some more. I'll probably be a full-fledged Compile fan before long.

Wyrdwad sent me. Aleste Gaiden was never released as stand-alone and only came out as part of Disc Station Special #4. The game was advertised in Disc Station #6 issue: As for that cover art: Someone decided to take the game and sell it on reproduction cartridge.

God of War (PS4, first time playthrough)
Pretty great game, but I do miss some of the pulpier elements and massive sense of scale the older games had.

Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim
This is an RTS where you do not control your units individually, but put monetary rewards on things and hope someone wants the money and does it. I had a lot of fun with it, and completed the original ~19 or so missions. It was my first time playing, I bought it from GOG. My time on GOG is 25.5 hours, I'm pretty slow at these kinds of games, lol.

Mega Man 1, via Megaman Legacy Collection, PS4 (replay, approx. 1 hour)
Fresh from playing through Mega Man 6, it's nice to see how far things have evolved from the original. There's something quite charming about how basic the backdrops and environments for this game are. Even though the bgm tracks are on the short side, they're still among the best in the series, in terms of hypnotic melodies.
Score: 7/10.

Kingdom Hearts 3 (PS4) FTP 32 hrs in Proud Mode
Hey look another game I've been waiting to play for over 10 years. I'll tell you now: Tales of Vesperia was better. The combat in KH3 is still fun but has several issues. For one the game is way too easy even on the highest difficulty. You get way too many special actions (Triangle button) that start little scenes you cannot skip that do lots of damage. And the Disney theme park 'Attraction' special actions are overpowered and mood breaking. Nothing like summoning a swinging pirate ship or a carousel to take out an army of heartless.
And oh man the story. Hope you played all those other games including the mobile one. The last few hours mention just about everything. Also the last few hours are the only spot the story matters. Nothing of consequence happens while exploring the Disney themed worlds. No Final Fantasy character apperances outside of the Moogle and a few graphic nods either. Were is my Sepiroth fight? Yuffie and Leon? C'mon man we waited over 10 years for this! Le sigh... Also sequel bait at the end. Looks like we are getting more Sora aka the worst/dumbest protagonist ever. Why is almost every other character more likable than he is? Except ol' blank slate princess waiting to be rescued Kairi. Those two deserve each other.
Well at least the game looks great. Disney Worlds look almost identical to the movies. Hell I was impressed by some shots of trees. And beating up heartless and nobodies is still fun. Just not as much fun as it was years ago in KH2 or BBS. For my money Birth By Sleep is still the best in the series. Guess I'm off to read about whatever the hell happened in this mobile game I didn't play...

Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle (NES) Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout (NES)
I played these two games today, both of them are simple, easy fun. I picked them up at a used game store nearby and just wanted to try them out, but i ended up completing both. First time playing for both. Birthday Blowout took about 1.5 hours, and Crazy Castle took 2.

Cosmic Star Heroine (PS4) - First playthrough, Time: 19h 30min (estimate) A Kickstarter RPG. It was pretty good, lot of neat little things and good combat. The pacing respects your time, but on the downside can feel rushed at times. The writing was the weak point, nothing particularly inspired or interesting and there were twice as many party members as there needed to be. You could easily cut or combine several characters and the game would've been better for it. Time was estimated from the in-game timer on my last save + time spent on the last batch of bosses.
