Man, I seem to have a lot of these. It's just that I want to know what's best before I consider any game purchases, and what better advice to trust than that of pure gamers? Anyway, it's about Crusader. The article said that the controls take some adjustment, but the game's still good... if I were incapable of playing the PC version, who recommends I get the Saturn version instead?

If you MUST get a console version, the PSX version is probably the better bet. Why? Because it has that one extra button. The controls still take a lot of getting used to, considering that they opted to add a bunch of button combinations to quickly use medkits and energy cells (I think it's like R1+Triangle+Left or something, can't remember because it's been too long since I played it).
Crusader was actually my first Playstation game.

The Saturn version is unfortunately very poorly ported a la Doom. Tons of choppiness that isn't in the PC or PSX release.

I gotcha. I should save my money for the PSX release then. Thanks, fellas!

I can't be that expensive. I bought it like four years ago at a Gamestop for like $5. I can't imagine there's that much demand for it.
I've never played the Saturn version but the PSOne version is quite choppy as well. Not the gameplay so much, but the animation.
One of my friends told about this program called VDMSound, which emulates old sound card hardware so you can run old DOS games better. I tried it with X-COM, and it runs a LOT better than it does on DOSBox. I'll give it a shot when I get home. It really does look and animate much better on the PC, even though the gameplay is generally a bit sloppy on both platforms.

Last time I checked, it works quite well too. I haven't fiddled with that in a while, but it might be worth using for other DOS games.

Weren't there two control methods for Crusader PC? As in, you could do relative control or absolute control?
Damn you Tony Zurovic and your awful control schemes.

Yeah.
When I played with the keyboard, I use relative (left and right turn, up moves forward.) It made it easier to clear out rooms. I'm not sure if the PS version let you change, but I think it used absolute.
Regardless, trying to roll was a pain despite which control method you used.

Wasn't rolling just the diagonal arrows? I didn't mind that much.

I could swear it was "Alt+Direction" or something like that to roll.
Trying to strafe was even worse.

Oh right, I think it was CTRL-arrow, although I could've sworn you could roll using the numpad 1/3/7/9, maybe you had to have numlock on or off.
Haha, and strafe was ALT-arrow. For some reason I never got annoyed by that, but that was in the days when I only played PC games and then usually just with the keyboard. Except Wing Commander.

I had a friend who actually played Wing Commander and TIE Fighter with a keyboard.
...
But yeah, actually, I think you could use the numberpad diagonols to roll. I never used it, though. Always stuck to the arrow keys.

I always played Doom and Rise of the Triad with just the keyboard. I even played X-Wing with just the keyboard but there's no way I'd be able to manage TIE Fighter.
