Well, eBay is your best bet though you'll pay some dough for it. I got mine when Gamestop was still taking trades on PSX games. It is pretty rare at this point and it is well-known now due to fan talk and the PS2 sequels so finding it randomly at some place is going to be difficult.

you're honestly better off skipping Suikoden 1. especially after playing the more polished games in the series. Not as bad as part IV, but not anywhere near the others.
I am considering letting my copy go (which I did happen upon at a 'random place' for $30 complete). But then I'd break the chain of near completion, which I guess won't be so bad once I track down my own copy of Suiko II (been playing a friend's copy).

Don't skip it..just because!
We're all nostalgic for an RPG, mine happens to be Suikoden so you know, I'll reccomend playing it. It has lots of nice touches and it's still a solid RPG as well as introducing the format used by many of the preceding games so if you're someone who likes seeing where things come from definately pick it up.

I am nostalgic for suiko1. when i rented it, i kept it for an entire week (amounting a huge late fee from blockbuster) and was captivated by it. i ended up beating it and decided i didn't have to purchase it. then suiko2 was announced and i bought it and loved it. for some stupid reason i had plenty of chances to grab suiko1 for a low price but i skipped it in favor of new games. god, i am such an idiot for ever buying an n64 and wasting time on that pos.
i digress. my friend bought suiko3 and i was so disgusted by it i couldn't play it for more than 15 minutes. since then i've kinda lost faith in the new suikos and really just care about the original 2. they were magical. i know suiko1 is aged but i'll be damned if it doesn't have classic chars like viktor and gremio. ah dammit now i really want to play it =/

I personally loved Suiko III. I can't figure out why someone would hate it so much. The characters were better presented, the villains weren't generic-evil, the rune system wasn't as broken, the skill system kicked ass, the battle system was challenging (and rather polished) and the story was nice.
The only thing I could figure was that since it was harder and more complicated, people hated it. War battles now required strategy (rather than Rock-paper-scissors), and the Partner system scared away fans of conventional battle. I also remember some dissing the game for being 3D despite the effort used to keep the graphics in the same cartoonish style.
The one thing I couldn't blame people for disliking would be the incredibly average soundtrack. But as a whole, I found Suikoden III to be more polished than the haters proclaimed it to be. I will admit that it has quite a learning curve, but the refinements in III made it so I had to force myself to play through the first game (generic story, unpolished gameplay, overtly easy bosses, one-dimensional characters, and a joke of a war-system). It might have been different if I had started with Suiko 1 rather than 2>to 3>back to 2(out of initial disgust)>back to 3 (where a serious attempt at the game rewarded me)>then to 1>back to 3 (2nd playthrough)>then to 5 (which is also better than 1 IMO)
also. . . Victor sucks ballz You can't remove his useless rune and he can't hit anything worth shit. He was always a liability when he forced his way onto my party in part 1 and 2. His only contribution was to the plot, but it wasn't significant enough for him to NEED to be in the battle group (aside from the StDrSword).
but in any case, If you can point me in the direction of a complete [english] copy of Suiko II for a decent price ($100 being the cap), I'll just sell you my copy of Suiko I for $30 shipped (via PriorityM).
