excelsior Some more Zelda-likes: Top down & isometric: Brain Lord (SNES, 1994) Super Cooks (MSX) - Sidescroller hybrid Light Crusader (MD) Alcahest (SNES) Gunple: Gunman's Proof/Ganpuru (SNES) Magic Knight Rayearth (SAT) Rolan's Curse II (GB) - No puzzles? Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys (PCE CD) Secret of Mana/Seiken Densetsu 2 (SNES) - Minor puzzles Seiken Densetsu 3 (SNES) - Minor puzzles Gauntlet IV (MD, 1993)(Quest Mode) - Small hub area rather than an overworld Daikatana (GBC) Ys I & II Chronicles (PC) Golden Axe Warrior (SMS) Sidescroller: Tomba!/Tombi! (PS1) - Collectathon Holy Umbrella: Dondera´s Wild!! (SNES) Shantae (GBC, 2002) 3D: Beyond Good & Evil (Multi) Shadow Man (N64, 1999) Brave Fencer Musashi (PS1) Banjo-Tooie (N64, 2000) - Collectathon w/ a hub area that eventually connects all levels Threads of Fate (PS1) Alundra 2 (PS1) - Hub map w/ a Clash at Demonhead-style world structure I also agree that only a few selected GG soundtracks actually manage to stand out (as opposed to a bunch on the Game Boy), mostly those composed by Koshiro/Kawashima (GG Shinobi 1+2, Batman Returns, Sonic 1, Streets of Rage 1+2).
Check out the GG Aleste games, The Smurfs, Tintin in Tibet, Road Rash, Alien 3, Arena: Maze of Death and Devilish.

Soul Reaver is of course "3D", I think you meant to put the other Legacy of Kain, Blood Omen, under "top down". Sylvan Tale belongs there, too. Another Zelda 1-inspired one that I'm fond of is the DOS classic(?) God of Thunder, a game that is freely available these days (including Steam). Story is not really of concern here and what's there is tonally very tongue in cheek. There's also no real distinction between overworld and underworld (no dungeons, so to speak), even towns are populated by enemies. Instead, nearly every screen is a convoluted puzzle (there also seems to be a Lolo/Eggerland influence), while backtracking only plays a minor role. And being a shareware game originally means that it's divided into three indiviual chapters. Overall it plays a bit faster and looser than Zelda and it's pretty tough, frustratingly so at times. But it's still rather charming and your main (or only?) weapon, a boomerang-like hammer, is fun to mess around with. You'd be correct to conclude that it should sit right at the #51 spot. Whoopsie - Yes, that is what I meant. I also missed Golden Axe Warrior. This is how the brain functions with very little sleep. I've amended the list.

I've played most of these before, but I guess I haven't always listened that closely. After some quick sampling, my impressions so far: GG Aleste II: pretty good, Arena: not sure, Alien 3: amazing!

I think Banjo Tooie is pushing it even considering adventure elements in the game. In terms of Zeldalike structure my thinking is overworld with separate dungeons, item gating and action based combat. I was also looking for the games we actually like (I'm not sure if there's a need for an all-encompassing list of Zeldalikes???). Would you say that applies to all those entries because I'm not familiar with some of them? Or perhaps there's different thinking on these 'conventions' of the genre?

I thought so too but after beating it, it has all the elements of one including permanent character upgrades (HP and moves) and backtracking to use gained moves which lets you unlock more areas sooner, sub areas that connect to each other and the train connecting all of them to the hubs, collecting progression within sub areas that's saved unlike in the first game, no lives system, some puzzles and most of the game is doing quests for NPCs. It also has various attack moves and ammo types, as well as FPS bonus levels. Sub areas also tend to contain either a dungeon like the underwater cave or a more secluded area within the area like the large building in grunty industries. The one thing missing is a map system which is more of a convenience feature but it is a major omission for that kind of game.
Yeah I like most of these but did give a 6.5/10 to the following as they're more flawed: Ys I & II Chronicles (PC) Golden Axe Warrior (SMS) Alundra 2 (PS1)
