Thanks for keeping it going!
Idk, strafing was kinda rare in those games before Pocky & Rocky but it could've been more forgiving in execution I suppose.

Super Mario Kart - Rank: B
I have no real desire to visit this game. For me, the pinnacle was Mario Kart 64, with it's great multiplayer. Not to say Super Mario Kart was bad. For it's time, it's quite innovative, with fun power-up, ingenious course design (with short-cuts using mushroom boost!). Strangely, thinking of the game itself puts me into a bittersweet mood (along with Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse and Hook), as it reminds me of my recently deceased friend, and the times we spent playing the living crap out of these games. It's one of few games that makes really effective use of Mode-7 effects.

Thanks for keeping it going! Idk, strafing was kinda rare in those games before Pocky & Rocky but it could've been more forgiving in execution I suppose. I might be wrong, but to me it feels like holding the fire button to keep the shooting-direction, while being able to move seperately, was something quite a few top down games did back then. The Ninja (Master System), for example, has one of the buttons always shooting upwards - so that's a form of strafing from an earlier genre entry.

Oh right, yeah there was aim lock in one of or both the 16-bit Contras and maybe Gunstar Heroes too. Should've been doable. I somehow confused the dodge move with strafing

Ah yes, strafing. The word escaped me at the time of writing. I had Super Smash TV in mind when I typed that, which achieves the effect through using the diamond shaped face buttons for directional shooting and acts similarly to a twin stick shooter. Obviously that game borrows from Robotron, so it's quite an old idea. Never heard that phrase before. According to the web it's either you going on a vacation or you're going to, well, pay someone for intercourse... for a whole week?! Either way, have a good time! Well it never hurts to have a backup plan, y'know in case the weather's bad. We have to make the best of things here in jolly old England.

I'd like to add my condolences also Snake . Thank you excelsior~ and thank you for starting this thread. For me, I have to admit that the SNES is the one console, I am most fond of.

For me, I have to admit that the SNES is the one console, I am most fond of. It's a sentimental favourite for me. I would say there are more robust libraries out there with greater variety nowadays, but the SNES was so formative in my particulars in the hobby that I feel it's influence to this day.

Week #9 - The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse
Pluto has disappeared and his pal Mickey is hot on his trail! But evil Emperor Pete won't make it easy. The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse is the first of a trilogy of Disney mascot platformers from Capcom released between late 1992 and early 1993 and later ported to the GBA.
Features:
Costumed Power-Ups
Help Firefighter Mickey extinguish the flames of the Fire Grotto
The General Store
Shop for everything you need to defeat Emperor Pete
6 Magical Worlds to Explore
Scale the rocky heights of Pete's Peak and head for the castle

After some consideration I decided to go for The Magical Quest as the first Capcom game for this thread. I picked up this game as a kid and have the Japanese version so I would have gotten it from our local import store somewhere between late 1992 and the first half of 1993.
A few things stand out in The Magical Quest. The visuals of course being instantly recognisable as being from Capcom use a really nice colour pallet with backgrounds being fairly muted enabling significant objects to stand out nicely. It doesn't resemble a cartoon as much as some other Mickey games from the era but it does look detailed and each sprite is highly finished. The level design is fairly open for a left to right platformer with a good deal of verticality. This encourages you to take your time exploring the levels which are full of collectable coins and does much to set the games pace which is very deliberate. The ability to spin apples into the air and cling on to gain height is unique and compliments the stage design. On the negative end regarding the pacing movement is fairly slow which seems more of an issue for modern play. The boss fights are also very drawn out with each boss taking probably twice as many hits as necessary making those a weak point. Generally it is the early stages where these flaws are the most noticeable due to the decision to add power up suits as permanent unlocks gradually through the game. This means the level design is limited by necessity early on, but it does mean each time a new suit is gained it feels significant and enhances the gameplay.
Despite getting some enjoyment from it as a kid and appreciating all the positive aspects here I think those early stages hold the game back enough that it's not in the conversation for the better platformers on the SNES.
Ranking - C
