Interesting read. One of the middle chapters read like a lame commercial for the consulting company that the publisher works for, though.
Also, I really didn't like the "case study" of Psychonauts. Rather than examining why it failed, it's easily dismissed as the game simply not having appeal to a mass audience. The solution, rather than something like "advertising to your audience", was "don't publish risky games". Urgh.
Bit of a depressing read, too, considering how much they espouse licensed and mass market games. One of the quotes at the end made me chuckle, where the PR guy admitted this one ATV game was terrible, but kept selling and selling from the shelves of Wal Mart.

I'm not gonna read that, I have the feeling this might give me TOO MUCH insight into the average game marketer's mindset. Ugh.

Yeah..that's a real downer line (like the whole thing) and I can't tell if that's his opinion or not (because if that's the markets opinion then it's the Marketing teams fault for not getting the message across). It definately feels like he's saying that everything niche is too difficult to sell but movie licensed games are gurrentteed sales.

It's bad, low-grade TV is generally celebrated by the masses.

We've already got the gaming equivalent of reality TV, so that's not too farfetched.
