Anyone else love these?
Thus far, I've played Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, as well as the more obscure Star Trek Generations.
I don't know why, I just like that surreal look they have. A shame the very concept is dated now (I remember a screenshot for a GCN game that you've been done like this, but never heard of it again)...
So, anyone have any recommendations? Favorites? But for reasons I can't quite explain, I don't think I'd do well with Wolfenstien 3D...something about mazes and 90 degree angles everywhere...*shudder shudder* Also, any that are in fact adventure games rather than shooters would be greatly appreciated.
And on a bizarre note, I would like to say that Star Trek Generations was actually kinda awesome. Sure, the ship combat was unnecessary and broken, and combat fairly sloppy (why does the Phaser have so many pointless power settings?), but damn were the level designs cool (not to mention that it played more like an adventure game than a shooter).

I was always interested in the Terminator one (I think it was Future Shock or something?) but I never got around to playing it cause...you know, I wasn't a PC gamer back then I strongly recommend Exhumed/Powerslave though, it's all sorts of awesome from what I remember.

Blood is an absolute must play. First episode is pretty hard but the second and third are mindblowingly badass. Best 2.5d shooter out there, especially when you tack on Cryptic Passage. You may find some enjoyment out of Cybermage and Strife. Is there an easy way to implement WASD+mouse movement to Blake Stone? I'd love to play the game again, but I hate having to hold a button to strafe. Everything else seems to work fine in the game (and I'm not terribly well versed in DOSbox's custom binding options) Years and years of WASD have totally spoiled me. Redneck Rampage isn't terrible, but it's fairly average. Suckin' Grits on Route 66 is quite a bit better. Going to be playing Redneck Rampage Rides Again here soon. Whole bundle is $6 on GoG (if you don't have an account, let me know and I'll shoot you an invite) Shadow Warrior is fucking dreadful. Duke Nukem 3D you mentioned, but have you played Duke Caribbean or Duke it Out in DC? Both are must plays, IMO. Heretic is a bit "meh" last I played it, but it's been a good few years. I'll have to give it another go. Been having problems with Hexen in the modern sourceports (easily breaking through walls and such), so I haven't given that a fair shot in some time. I really liked Nightmare 3D back when it came out, but that had a bit to do with me being gay for the Hugo series as well. Good times. They're not 2.5d games but they're similar enough and they're pretty fucking awesome adventure games; you'd probably totally dig Under a Killing Moon and Pandora Directive. (assuming you haven't played them already, of course) I was always interested in the Terminator one (I think it was Future Shock or something?) but I never got around to playing it cause...you know, I wasn't a PC gamer back then I strongly recommend Exhumed/Powerslave though, it's all sorts of awesome from what I remember. Those two Terminator games on that engine (Future Shock and Skynet) were the bee's fucking knees. So damn ahead of everything else, engine wise. Like, Ultima Underworld ahead of its time or Terra Nova ahead of its time. Powerslave seems to have some pretty wonky mouse control issues. Trying to sort it out right now, but I think I'll just play the Saturn version first instead and sort out the PC version later. Well ok, and apparently the Saturn version is the easiest. I know, I fail.

Heretic and its sequel, Hexen are good choices. Both basically play out like medieval DOOM (in fact, both use the DOOM engine, I believe) and are developed by Raven Software, who are responsible for games such as Star Trek: Elite Force, Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and helped iD out with Quake 4, among others. They're also working on the new Wolfenstein game.
What was cool about Hexen compared to Heretic (which really was just a medieval DOOM clone with an inventory system, though it was a pretty fun game) is that it had some scant RPG elements in the form of character classes. There was a fighter, a cleric, and a mage, and all three played pretty differently. It also had a different type of level design compared to other first person shooters. Instead of completely linear level progression, you had a central main level, and connected to it were a bunch of side levels. You had to solve puzzles across all these little side levels and the main level, and they were often all connected to each other. There were also boss fights, and defeating them meant going to the next main level.

I'm not sure if this was a completely sprite-based FPS as its been years upon years since I've played it, but I do remember that I enjoyed Star Wars: Dark Forces for PC.

Rise of the Triad is a pretty flawless experience with great weapons.
Terminator: Future Shock is the Terminator game you need to play. Bethesda actually did one that came out just before Wolfenstein 3D as well. It's not full free movement like Wolfenstein/etc. but actually lets you aim around the screen with a mouse as you explore LA as either Kyle Reese or The Terminator.
Very interesting game, though still not as good as Future Shock. Future Shock is damn intense even now.
It's not fully sprite based (except for the guns you hold and the props) technically but it's definitely worth it. It's actually the first FPS ever to use 3D graphics, even before Quake.
You have to try out Descent at some point, totally rad.
Power Slave is worth playing on the PSX just to see how miraculously smooth and fast it runs on that system. It's pretty impressive.
Finally, you HAVE to play Strife. It's the only non Heretic/Hexen Doom game made on the Doom engine. It's basically like Deus Ex only in a post apocalyptic world ruled by alien invaders. You get to roam around and talk to people, do quests, choose sides, etc.

Lot of good ones have already been mentioned, so here's some not so good ones- Kens Labyrinth- Made by the same bloke who went on to create the Build engine used in Duke 3d i believe.
Corridor 7: Alien Invasion- Low budget FPS using wolf3d engine, while the game isn't that good it has a few interesting things, such as multiple visors for infrared and night vision, and finishing levels requires certain amounts of enemies to be defeated, rather than just finding the exit. It also has a multiplayer mode, where the player may choose to play as the standard guy from SP, or one of the aliens you encounter. Choosing an alien gives the player different abilities.
Witchaven- Another Capstone game, though this one is at least up to date(for its time) using the build engine. This is another that isn't considered good (I must admit I found this game quite enjoyable) but has a few interesting bits. It's something along the lines of Hexen only more like a role playing game. Most of the weapons are melee, and also suffer degradation, meaning the player has to be on the lookout for new stuff constantly. It also contains items the player can carry and magic spells which can be learned. Haven't played this in a long time, but I believe you could even level up your character. This also has a sequel, surprisingly called, Witchaven 2, though I have never played it.
Bloodshot/Battle Frenzy- Released on Mega drive and Sega CD, this is worth a look just because the entire game can be played through split screen in co-op, and has an option for deathmatch. This game amazed me for a Mega Drive title.
Also, am I the only one who when first playing Metroid Prime had flashbacks of Hexen, MP reminds me of Hexen so much?

Wait...why are people hating on ShadowWarrior? Also a really old bizarre FPS you may want to check out is XS kind of like a Sprite-Based Unreal Tournament.

Well, since we're listing pretty much everything we can here:
Chasm: The Rift: one of the most ignored good FPS games of the time Rebel Moon Rising: not a great FPS but one of the earliest, if not the first, games to support 1280x1024 resolution Space Hulk: thoroughly mediocre shooting mechanics but interesting strategic elements CyClones: the opposite game to Raven's Heretic; a good game passed aside by all the more interesting FPS at the time
And of course, you have your dozens upon dozens of first-person RPG-esque games that you might not be referring to.

Wow...where to begin?
Okay, I've had my eye on Blood for a while. More than likely, if the main character looks awesome to me, I'll at least give it a shot.
Cybermage and Strife look really awesome.
RR, R66 and RRRA...I'll admit I typically hate the whole "Redneck" theme, but damn do those graphics look awesome. Is it odd that I actually like cluttered, pixilated textures?
Dang...so many. Oh, and no, I don't have a GoG account.
BTW, how's TekWar? It sounded kinda cool, but I'm not sure what to make of it...
