Prelim article here (pics only): www.hardcoregaming101.net/powerinstinct/powerinstinct.htmPower Instinct was Atlus' attempt to take on Capcom in the great 2D fighter wars of the early/mid 90s. It's a little bit goofy, but not quite as cartoonish or deranged as Waku Waku 7. It's mostly famous for the small little granny fighter who attacks with her dentures. There are five games total, the most recent being the AWESOME Matrimelee for the Neo Geo, which is getting a port to the PS2 real soon. The other most popular character, the magical girl Clara, got her own isometric action game that is kinda OK. The above picture is from Groove on Fight, the fourth in the series. Take note that the character being "pleasured" (it's...uh...part of a transformation animation for the old woman) is apparently the first openly gay character in a fighting game. This may or may not be true. I am sure Zangief does not count, but Benimaru? C'mon. I get the impression that these were much more popular in Japan than America, because I had never even heard of it until Rasa bought a music CD of it at Book Off in NYC. I didn't even play any of them until Matrimelee came out.

...Yeah, that definitely qualifies as a "WTF" moment in gaming.

Okay, that above pic would be so hot... but (butt indeed) aren't those supposed to be the old ladies, Oume and Okane? As Kurt said, they have to ability to become young, and... well, I sure hope that they don't pull an act like that lady from The Shining! Do they?! Welp, nightmares aside.......... oh, goddammit no. I was just reminded of the most horrific sight ever in a video game. Power Instinct 2. Kinta, the kid. Knock him through the air. Iiiiiiiiiiii... don't wanna talk about it. Okay, nightmares aside FOR REAL, the series has always been okay. In the early games, the difficulty was seriously cracked and damn near impossible. You want to fold by the fifth opponent in PI2. However, the music has been pretty good, and it gets points for the aforementioned WTF moments. However, the facelift that Matrimelee brought to the table really did a lot of good. The OST is just... wow. It's just wow! And all of the characters look awesomer than they ever have been, with some new ones (and my personal favorite, Olaf). The fighting system itself has been given a huge kick up the arse and plays much more fluidly than its predecessors. Until Matrimelee, the series has only been okay. But if they make another PI game, I would really look forward to it.

Just for you Sotenga. I agree, the early games are kinda OK. PI2/Legends plays well but the difficulty in single player is Art of Fighting 2 level of annoyance. Groove on Fight is much better, but it still doesn't feel particularly...special. Matrimelee is definitely where it hits its stride.

Just for you Sotenga. I am barf. No compute. Folks, if you knock Kinta here through the air, you see it all. Yep, absolutely uncensored. Veritable child porn. I... am pretty sure that PI2 never made it outside of Japan. Yup. Yessir, indeeeeeeeed.

When you get past its goofiness, you realize PI is just a mediocre fighting game. There is no real meat in its fighting system.

Edit: Scratch that... the worst video game character ever.

Matrimelee is great for its music and victory quotes, however that Final Boss- (Princess Sissy isn't it?) almost made me destroy the game cartridge on many, many occasions!

Most SNK fighting games are like that though. Still, at least they give you that continue service thing.
Johann or whatever his name is from Rage of the Dragons is equally as bad as Sissy.

Oh yeah I guess you are right- I think I have only beaten Rugal on King of the Fighters '98 about twice or so. Cheap, so very cheap... Incidentally isn't Rage of the Dragons by the same team as Matrimelee? I think you can see it being played in the Background where the geeks are singing about arcades?

This only serves to remind me of the completely unfair battle against Original Zero in KoF 2001. Screw Igniz - he was much easier than Zero, despite being AFTER him. I mean, Zero is a cheapshot with ranged attacks, uses ALL his strikers at once, and has some completely unblockable attacks. That black hole attack of his sucks too.
Oh, and did I mention that he regains ALL of his health if you lose one team member? You could have him almost killed and then he'd be in top form again if you just can't avoid that damn bladed coat of his.

UNNNNGGGHHHHHHH... *bad flashbacks* Both O.Zero and Igniz are equal bastards, IMO. Zero's strikers are really cheap, but I can only get past Igniz's fucking chain blades about a quarter of the time. However, I figured out that if I just pit one character against the ungodly powerful bastard, and make the other three team members strikers, my character is actually powerful enough to deal out significant damage! And also, this doesn't give either of them the chance to revive their health after losing one team member, since you only have one! When I found that out, they didn't seem as satanic as they once were. Still, THEY REALLY SUCK CORKBOARD. KoF2001 certainly ain't one of my favorite installments... ... but I digress. Time to ask an overdue question: Do the above ladies show any full frontal IN THEIR YOUNG FORM?! God help Atlus if they expose their flat old......
