...that Devil Summoner for PS2 has possibly the greatest random battle theme ever heard in a video game? www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgVr3f30oZcSeriously. Meguro just took Kenji Ito (my previous favorite RPG music composer) and made him his bitch, here.

Meguro will always been the God Emperor of rocking RPG battle music. The tracks in Nocturne alone make it so even though this song is awesome also. That soundtrack's battle songs are all worth a listen too if you like this (I'm sure there's similar Youtube postings of them all).
Downloading them isn't always the best since a lot of times they're rips from the PS2 game itself, which has terrible sound quality during battles (I assume they heavily compressed everything to lessen load times?). I ended up buying the cds eventually because the music is just that damn awesome.
Megami Tensei, God what a franchise. Even the map music in those games rocks out.

Digital Devil Saga 2 has my favorite battle music of any SMT game: Battle For Survival. That music inspires you to kill everything in sight.
That is a really good track, though. It has that 'your life depends on this fight' Meguro trademark vibe.
Isn't that image from Devil Summoner 4 though? (I know the track's from 3.)

Even if Meguro didn't compose the tunes for earlier SMT games, they really rock as well. That's a defining point of the series, great music! Nice collection of music of SMT1 in the same video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=5K3SwwrStc8

Strangely, I don't think the actual CD of Devil Summoner had the main battle theme, which made no sense. They did have it downloadable on the web site, which is where I got the version I used as an MP3.
Nocturne had strangely downsampled music. I don't know why. It was only the battle themes too.

Yeah, I don't know why the music is that way either, but it's definitely intentional. I noticed the same "crunchy" sound in a Persona 4 song; the bathhouse dungeon music. I'm quite sure a few songs had that same effect in P3 as well, but I can't recall.
And yeah, Devil Summoner had a great battle theme... Too bad that was the best part about the game.

You forgot Rasputin.

Robo-pimp Rasputin. The sound quality in Nocturnes battle isn't so good but the actual songs themselves are amazing. It's a shame that since they're battle themes I'm sick of them all. I'm a big fan of "Madness" from DDS2 as well.

Naw, dude, best one of 'em all? "Big Battle" from Digital Devil Saga 1.
Not that all the others aren't awesome, but c'mon... Big Battle is SO where it's at! Shoji Meguro really does kick ass. (:

I never got as far as robo-pimp Rasputin, and I doubt he could offer any incentive to start playing that disappointing game again...
Anyway, I must ask, is Nocturne the only SMT with more than one battle song?... Not counting "Boss Battle" music.

I had fun with Devil Summoner. It's hardly an epic game, but they were trying something new, and it was more enjoyable than not.
The sequel's going to bring back the long-absent demon conversation system for recruitment, so I expect it'll be MUCH better.
Especially if the 'robo-pimp' returns.

(: -Tom Good song, but too slow for me. I prefer when his songs have a hyperactive energy to them.(Devil Summoner's main battle theme, DDS2's battle themes, etc...)

I love SMT1's music ;D I downloaded some of it but I got the ps1 versions instead, which massively suck compared to the snes ones. The low-tech dirtiness of the snes versions definitely add a lot to the atmosphere. Yeah, I don't know why the music is that way either, but it's definitely intentional. I noticed the same "crunchy" sound in a Persona 4 song; the bathhouse dungeon music. I'm quite sure a few songs had that same effect in P3 as well, but I can't recall. Um, I think that's just because they're compressed too much It's not intentional, the versions on the soundtrack aren't like that. They must have not had enough space or something
