www.hardcoregaming101.net/bof/bof.htmShould officially stick this one up this weekend. I'm...not a huge fan of the series, which is why I preferred that someone else write about them. They always struck me as pretty mediocre (except for BoF2, which was decent for a 16-bit RPG.) This doesn't apply to Dragon Quarter, which is probably one of the best RPGs on the PS2, and has one of the best soundtracks ever too.

I'm going game shopping again this weekend and I'm trading in several XBox titles. After having read this article, I might keep an eye out for Dragon Quarter.

I always thought BoF looked somewhat interesting, but I never really explored it. Of course, RPG's aren't my most favored genre, and... well, I don't think I've ever played a single BoF game to date. However, that is a DAMN great article. I may see if I can play the first two sometime in the future...

I've been hot and cold about the Breath of Fire series myself. The only one I've played all the way through was Breath of Fire III, which so far is my favorite. For the others (except for Dragon Quarter, which I haven't started) I have a habit of suspending them due to apathy, or getting caught up with something else.
I've had Dragon Quarter lying around for a while. If its good, then I may have to finally check it out soon.

Now that was a nice article. I whole heartedly agree with everything that is said about Breath of Fire IV. ;D I don't like the series as a whole (heck, I don't even like the RPG genre, except for Action RPGs), but I really enjoyed playing Breath of Fire III couple of years back and I even listen to its soundtrack now and then.

I've played 1-3, but won't touch 5 and can't play 4. I don't have a PS1 or PS2

Breath of Fire was the first RPG I ever beat, so it has a special place in my heart. I like 3, it was enjoyable in it's time, and I really didn't like five.

Nice article I'v only played the first BOF, I think it's just a little above average. Nothing special. I always wnated to play BOF3 because some friends of mine say it's very good, and BOF5 beacuse even with it's flaws, it has a really unique gameplay.

Wow, that was a fantastic read. I've never played any BOF before, but I'm going to get BOF II right now!

A few inaccuracies that need pointing out.
Breath of Fire II for the GBA introduces a RUN button, stat indicators at shops (so you can figure out what they do before buying), and a damage bar that tells you how close you are to killing an enemy that you've already defeated. Some enemies have also been tweaked. Specifically that one group of jumping midgets in armour.
Crimson tears was developed by Spike, supposedly made up of remnants of the Tobal no.2 design team. It was merely published by capcom.

I fell in love with the series when I played BOF2, if only because of Katt. I *really* wish Capcom would re-translate it, though. I think the game would be even better with proper grammar and understandable dialogue.

The series has always been somewhat enjoyable for me. BoF1 and 2 I played through multiple times on the SNES. BoF3 I have a save file about half way through sitting around from several years ago, but I still haven't gotten around to finishing it. Dragon Quarter, though, I've been meaning to play, and actually have it sitting here, but just haven't gotten around to it.
Also, just a minor correction, in the BoF2 section, it states that the Nina in that game is the ancestor of BoF1's Nina, when it should, in fact, say that she's the descendant.

I've only played BoF III and despite heckling from a few other quarters- namely my brother- I have a great fondness for the game. While in someways a standard RPG, I liked the mix of magic and technology, the character designs, and I rather liked the music to boot. The fishing game... amazing and fun. I know my brother's picked up Dragon Quarter to round out his collection, but I think it'll be a while before he gets around to playing it.
That all being said- excellent article. While you may not be a fan of the series, it seems you gave it a fair shake.

Nice read although in my view BoF IV was much better then III, to me III maybe it was the translation that ruined the game for me but the story could have been better. As for V I love it even though it was very experimental and it had some gameplay problems.
