www.hardcoregaming101.net/evermore/evermore.htmSquare USA's infamous action-RPG, which seems to have been hated when it came out, yet has retrospectively become something of a huge classic. I somehow got a copy of this from my roommate and I can't remember why, but I barely played it. I probably should, or at least listen to the much-lauded soundtrack.

Ugh. Not sure who's been saying this was a good game, but I couldn't disagree more. About the only thing worth mentioning is that a few characters from various FF games make some pretty random cameos. Otherwise, it was an entirely forgettable experience.

My brother and I were talking about that market the other day! I wish more games had something similar to that. Flawed game, but not a bad one.

Good article.
...but I really hate that this game basically denied Seiken Densetsu 3, a game that was 1000 times better, an American release.

But according to the article and interview (which I need to get a real link for), it DIDN'T deny Seiken Densetsu 3's release. It wasn't going to happen anyway, and none of Sierra's localization resources were diverted away due to Evermore.
The programmer hypothesized that SD3 never came out possibly due to the large amount of bugs, which NOA was stringent about...but then Evermore had a bunch of bugs too and that passed QA somehow.

"or at least listen to the much-lauded soundtrack"
What? This game had music?

The officially released soundtrack often goes for at least $100 on eBay and such. It's not a typical SNES soundtrack, but the people who love it, REALLY love it.

I have fond memories of Evermore. Sure, I haven't played it since it came out, but I had a lot of fun with it when I first played it, even if if I recall it being pretty difficult(I doubt I'd feel that way nowadays).

It looks like an actually competent game. However...we still didn't get SD3.
I realize now that this is probably not Evermore's fault--it seems clear that Square merely hates us, as they feel we evidently need yet another port of Chrono Trigger rather than just giving us a localized version of SD3.

Amusingly, the UK will see it's first ever Chrono Trigger release next month; so if S-E hate the US what on Earth do they think of Europe?

I totally skipped this on release because of its western feel and art, without even trying it out! Talk about preconceptions.
I'm glad this is featured on the site. I can't wait to read it and see if it changes my mind.

I think Square's mistake that led people into believing this was a "Seiken Densetsu 3" substitute for the US was naming the game "Secret of Evermore". Couldn't they have come up with a different title like "World of Evermore", or simply "Evermore"?

Couldn't they have come up with a different title like "World of Evermore", or simply "Evermore"? Kurt mentioned this earlier, but there was an interview with one of the people who worked on the game. Actually, I don't think it was an interview so much as his own personal website with his recollected thoughts on the project. Anyhoo, on the site, he mentions that the original title for the game was always "Evermore". The decision to rename it "Secret of Evermore" came from Square out of left field and at the last minute.

Tbh at the time I was devestated that this appeared to be coming out instead of Mana...I did end up buying a copy of it but gave up from boredom during that tedious market trade section :\
