It's a really ugly situation, because Obama's full of shit, and he's going to run our country into the ground like an American Airlines flight in the Midwest. But as you've mentioned before, we could be dragging the rest of the world down with us too. Hey, at least he isn't being billed as a great businessman despite having outsourced all his companies jobs to China, nor is he stating that most women who were raped "weren't actually raped" - nor has he stated that he'd be quite pleased to start a war in Iran. Oh- nor did he imply that the unemployed were all useless scum Obama is a flawed president for sure- but I find it hilarious when Republicans say he done nothing he promised despite the fact most of his laws were over-ruled by Republicans. If you want to look at someone who ran the American economy into the ground have a look at George W. Bush - 8 years of that retard can't be fixed in 4 years. Not all of those are Romney, btw, that was a different politician that said the "legitimate rape" thing. My problem with Obama is that while yes, the Republicans have been trying to cock-block him, it's his job as a leader to get past that and try to reach a compromise with them. He's done jack and shit in that regard, unless you count him throwing blame around.

I'm not convinced that Obama could compromise with those guys without basically giving up everything the party stands for in the first place. They've all but said (actually I think McConnell is on the record as saying something quite similar) that they've been out to ruin him, and the right's motivation toward their base is to take Nixon's 'southern strategy' to entirely new levels: old Birchers / people who haven't gotten over the red scare (hence the "Obama is a communist" meme), and extreme fundamentalists and racists ("Obama is a secret Muslim" works on both counts, especially for people who remember Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam). These are people whose worldview makes it impossible to compromise with Obama on anything, in about the same way that compromising with Hitler or bin Laden probably sounds abhorrent to us.
The funny thing is that I've noticed a huge surge in early voter turnout (many of whom, I would imagine, are going to vote Obama -- they'd be voting early because they cannot afford or have not been given time off from work, and the working class understandably skews pretty left-wing overall), likely on account of this strategy by the right; they have heard the ideology of the far-right of the Republican party and want nothing to do with it. While I think if you're middle class, white, and (maybe not as significant after controlling for class) male, this election isn't going to make a damn bit of difference -- accounting for a lot of the apathy I see in places like here and among some of my near-age peers -- the direction this country could go toward in the event of a Republican victory if you're not most or any of those things is about as close to existential hell as I could imagine.
Just the sheer number of attempts at minority disenfranchisement occurring right now do not give me hope for a bright future in this country in the event of a right-wing majority government here.

See, this is why after watching the VP debates I decided I wanted Biden for president. He wasn't some mealymouthed person during the debates, and he was constantly calling out Ryan. It was something I respected (even if Fox News doesn't) these are debates after all not sit and watch a 90 minute campiagn ad....

Sorry, discussion not over just yet. My problem with Obama is that while yes, the Republicans have been trying to cock-block him, it's his job as a leader to get past that and try to reach a compromise with them. He's done jack and shit in that regard, unless you count him throwing blame around. Believe it or not, but the president doesn't have infinite power. A huge amount of what a president wants to do has to go through congress. And this ties into what muteKi was talking about. Not even a president can (legally) power through a filibuster. And that was what happened for 4 years. Filibuster after filibuster just literally ruining everything that Obama wanted to do, even after trying to compromise. They even threatened to shut down the government just to make Obama look weak. And, on top of that, do you really think that 4 years is enough time to recover from the recession? Like, really? Even if all of Obama's policies were in effect I'd be amazed if we were better after 10 years (Note, it'd be worse under the standard neo-con model that the Republicans have been adopting over the past few decades. After all, how did we get into this mess?). So, while I'm not trying to say that Obama was a great president, he wasn't, I also think that he was nowhere near as bad as some may make him out to be. And I'm talking about criticism from the standard moderate voter base, and not the absurd shouting from the neo-con Fox News base that few people really do honestly believe.

I yawn at your American politics. Everytime I hear about it it makes me glad that I live in a smaller country.
We actually had presidential elections too earlier this year and its as simple as it could get; candidates from different parties talk, do a little debate and we vote. Its nothing like what you guys have and its pretty tame.
And hey, we almost had gay president (he was a runner-up ). Try doing that in America.

I like Biden too. I don't know why people make him out to be some kind of joke. Because he's caught cursing sometimes and won't pussyfoot around? It's like people will bitch about politicians acting like politicians, and then they'll whine when a politician ISN'T acting like a politician, aka having a "gaff", which is just them acting like a real fucking human being. Biden is always great in debates. He's always loaded with facts and figures, and he's not afraid to tell someone they're flat-out wrong.
I'm not saying I'd put a ton of trust in Biden because I just don't do that with politicians, but I'd definitely take him over Obama. Back in the primaries in 2008, I was also hoping that Hillary would take it rather than Obama, but, of course, people see her as a huge bitch, which I attribute 100% to her being a woman and no one would complain if she was a man. There are basically two places for women in politics: you can be a strong, confident, intelligent woman, but that will threaten a ton of insecure men so they'll think you're a bitch and won't like you, or you can be the cutesy, dumb ditz, a la Palin, there just as eye candy and to attract equally dumb women who aren't engaged politically unless there's someone they can relate to who's talking about taking their kids to soccer games, which doesn't mean jack for policy but "OMG SHE UNDERSTANDS ME AND WILL REPRESENT ME!"

I hate Biden. His RAVE Act put a chilling effect on the dance music scene, and he was behind the Megaupload book burning... I mean shutdown.
Don't even get me started on Hilarity... I mean Hillary Clinton. I don't know where to start. If she gains any power, those CIS PRIVILEGE ALERTS may be a reality.
And I hate how the same people who gave Obama a pass on everything are those who want Bush impeached and charged with war crimes for less.

Cars. We took ours into the shop today to have a valve replaced. Turns out that something in the cylinder is breaking apart, so it's either blow $2500 on the cylinder, a new engine or a new used car that may be even worse than the one we've had for five years. Quandaries I would prefer not having. *sigh*

I don't give Obama a free pass, but Bush did kinda break international laws. Like, a bunch of times.

I don't like what happened to Al-Awlaki's son any more than the next guy but you can't be seriously coming in here and trying to tell me that's on the order of the torture policies engaged in and then lied about during the Bush regime, or basically any aspect about starting the war with Iraq.

I think there are literally a million problems in this country and around the world of greater importance than laws that affect dance clubs and Megaupload. Maybe I'm just getting too old to think feeble attacks on my hobbies are the end all, be all in politics. I'm a little more concerned about things like getting a job, health insurance, being able to buy a home someday and retire before I'm dead.
