Don't forget classics like "White Trash With Money", or "Drill Here, Drill Now". Country music makes rap look like a refined art.

Rap really IS a refined art, in many ways. That is, if you sift through the trash.

Is that to prove me wrong, or is it something good?
I just know that it's hard to write rap lyrics, if they're good, for the same reason it is hard to write certain poem types. And to actually rap (speaking that way) is hard too.

That was to prove your point. I love me some hip-hop.
Also, small pet peeve, now that I think about it: asking someone their musical preferences, only to have them say that they either love EVERYTHING or that they love EVERYTHING, BESIDES COUNTRY AND RAP. The former are usually just people who don't really listen to music and the latter are metal heads who always act embarrassed by their tastes. It's like, man, just say you don't listen to music or you only like some genres.

Well to be clear, I like a lot of rap. But there can be no denying that there are a ton of lousy artists out there, all saying the same shit the same way. It's like all of rap is just a contest to find the latest word that ends in "igga", for rhyming purposes.
Yeah, there are some talented rappers out there, but they are very few and far between. And again, I'm saying this as a fan of the genre.

I like rap a damn lot, but I'm more a fan of the 80's and 90's stuff than today's... poppish bullshit.
That segues into another thing that grinds my gears: People making a generalization of an entire genre (like rap music) based off only 3 damn songs (or movies, or games, or whatever.)

That's very true. Rap as a whole isn't just Lil Wayne or Chingy or Ja Rule. Unfortunately, that's exactly what the rap of today has become. But I guess that's how it goes with most things. I had to stop reading comics because they put out something brilliant like No Man's Land, and followed it up with absolute tripe like Officer Down. Nothing good lasts forever.

I'm really out of the loop with rap and hip-hop, what would you class a lot of the music in Persona 3? Because I like that and it seems to sound close to rap.

Yeah, a lot of today's mainstream hip-hop is garbage. I only really like Kanye out of this decade's crop of artists. Everyone else is holdovers from the 90's (Snoop, DMX, Wu Tang, Eminem, The Roots), or hell, the 80's (Beastie Boys). That said, if you want good hip-hop from this decade, you need to look at the underground. Or even nerdcore.

The thing is though, I actually like a bit of everything I think... I mean, there's probably some genre I dislike, but I do like country (not really modern stuff, but I like Cash and stuff. And some more cowboyish things), and I like rap (Wu-tang Clan, nerdcore stuff, Eminem, Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer ;D).
But mostly, I like metal or really atmospheric music. And I couldn't live without my synth.

It's hard for me to classify Japanese music as anything other than Japanese. It's definitely not true rap, but more like an emulation of it. Is there a genre called J-rap?

I usually don't tag Japanese music with "J" at the start, because I don't see the point in singling out one nation when I could really call Aerosmith "US-Rock".

It's like, man, just say you don't listen to music or you only like some genres. I find that when most people ask you to name your musical preferences, they're generally looking for a one-word answer, preferably only one or two syllables, and if you name a genre they're not familiar with, you'd better be able to explain it to them in one or two sentences. At this point, I pretty much tell everyone that I listen to (and I quote) "weird stuff," which is a painfully incomplete answer, but at least it saves me having to explain to everyone what slo-core or IDM is. edit: And Vendaval, don't forget about Britpop.
