Yeah. Between this and the whole "chink in the armor" thing in the NBA, it seems like bigot season is well under way.

As a Knicks fan, the deal people are making about Jeremy Lin's race (and all the 'fun' racial stereotypes accompanying it) is really pissing me off. I'm just glad we have a point guard who's actually good and he's an awesome story. But the "chink in the armor" thing is what gets me, especially the people attempting to defend it as ignorance of a racial slur against someone of Chinese descent. Something like that doesn't happen at a massive media outlet like ESPN, especially on their .com's front page, with it being an honest mistake. Especially since it makes no sense in context (even with Lin, the Knicks aren't exactly known as a defensive team). I think it was an attempt to be "cute" backfiring horribly.

Man, horrendously sexist comments seem to be the in thing this week or something. Both my wife and I overheard terribly offensive statements about women on Monday (luckily what she heard wasn't directed at her), and it's really upsetting to me that this kind of insensitive bullshit is going on. And then there's this Cross Assault debacle. Gah. This is one of those (many) times I've disgraced and disgusted with my gender.
*storms off*
Edit to storm back - Racism is also fucking shitty, and it's inexcusable. Lin's a great player. Case closed. Quit being douches and making up wisecracks about him being Asian. It doesn't fucking matter. We're all human.
*storms off again*

Wow, that's really lousy. Over here, I pay like $7 a month for vision and dental combined. Granted, I'm much more likely to die from something serious, but the teeth and eyes are covered.

Oh, I'm pretty sure paid private coverage from a third party is still an option, (though I honestly haven't looked into it), it's just not covered by the government under basic medicare.

Right, it just seems absurd that vision and dental are so cheap in America, but you guys don't get it covered by your VAT.

I'm not sure what a VAT is, but otherwise I'd say it's just one of those odd differences.
I don't know what parts of vision are and aren't covered by medicare, but I'm pretty sure I went to see an ophthalmologist without having to pay at least once.

Ah, just goes to show my ignorance. As I recall, VAT is the extra tax that UK citizens have to pay on all purchases, which supposedly is what funds your free health care. Could be that Canada is different, I honestly don't know if they're a province of England or not anymore.

It's actually a trickier question than it sounds. By the books, Canada's head of state is still technically the British Monarchy, but by and large, it's a sovereign nation.
This video sums it up in a more or less accurate and entertaining fashion:

Well- in the UK if you are employed at all you have to pay for your dental care. If you are unemployed it is free- that is, if it is an NHS dentist. Thing is most dentists are now going private so they can charge the equivalent of $80 to even take a look inside your mouth. To make it better- our current government has decided it effectively wants to privitise the NHS- which then means... you guessed it, paying for medical care which is supposed to be free. Are they reducing tax/vat contributions as a result? Nope- they raised those! However, they are happy to bail out the banks that pay almost no tax, that made billions of pounds in losses and caused mass unemployment. Basically- the UK is a complete joke now.
As for things pissing me off- how about the last 3 months when I come to think about it? Literally nothing is going right in my life at the moment. /emo

I don't understand why people still advocate socialized health care when it never, ever works.
