Finally it has arrived A few things: Misspellings-Page 1 "The difference here is that the control response is lightening fast, " -Page 2 "which are quick but caues minimal damage" -Page 3 "It wasn't developed by the same team asas the previous installments" -Page 4 "Samurai Shodown IV was once again developed by the Garopagos Team and released in 1995" "although Team Garopagos has modified " (it's Galapagos, from Galapagos Islands and their Iguanas) Corrections-Page 4 "The final boss this time is Gaoh, who can transform into a demon mid-battle." Actually, he transforms into a demon mid-battle in the USA version of SS5 (and has only one background), in the japanese version you fight his demon form for the full round exclusively on the second round (with a different background). Sort of like normal Amakusa y 2nd round mad Amakusa from SS1. This was changed in the USA version because the story was cut. -Page 5 "Amakusa makes a return from SSIV (he's also the ending boss of arcade mode) " This is correct, but incomplete. Amakusa, Zankuro, Gaoh and Mizuki are all last bosses. You just have to perform a fatality on each of them to go to the next one. If you don't then you get a bad ending. There are 3 bad endings and one good ending. The real final last boss is Mizuki. MissingOn page 2, SS2 is missing its character select screen (all the other games have one shown). Also, for screenshot purposes there really is no point in differentiating between Neo-Geo and Arcade shots because the games are exactly the same (only the 2nd and 3rd pages say it). Now, if you ARE going to differentiate between the two then you have to play the game in console mode and arcade mode to get the screenshots showing the correct credits and level on the bottom. Console mode has "Credits 4" (you can never have more than 4) on the left and right side. Arcade Mode has "Credits 0 - Level 4 - Credits 0" on the left, center and right sides. If it's in European Arcade Mode it will only have "Level 4 - Credits 0" on the center and right side (which is how all the screens are). Since no one is actually going to replace all the screens, then they should all be called "Arcade" OR "Neo-Geo" (but not both)since most people will notice right away that all the images are actually from the Arcade (MVS) mode and not Neo-Geo (AES). Arcade (Euro, credits just on the right) Arcade (USA, credits on the left and right) Console (no more than 4 credits, no level numeral in the center)

FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BEST SERIES EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is really a fantastically written piece, and I have no qualms with the views that are stated in it, but as a rather intense fan of SamSho, I can't very well avoid nit-picking about a few things, so excuse my perhaps excessive tone.
WHERE IN THE HOLY HELL IS THE NAKORURU GAME!?!?!?
Senryo Kyoshiro is based on a fictional character named Nemuri Kyoshiro from a novel called "Sleepy-Eyed Kyoshiro, Notes on Villany" (English title, of course) by Shibata Tosaburo that was made into a series of films between 1963 and 1969. Nemuri Kyoshiro differs from Senryo Kyoshiro most notably in that the former character is a MAJOR LEAGUE ASSHOLE and has nothing whatsoever to do with kabuki theater. They both share red hair and their names, though. Senryo is kind of like Nemuri if he was a kabuki and less of a jackass.
Caffeine Nicotine is based on Musashi's (the guy Haohmaru is based on) theorized mentor Soho Takuan. Whether or not Soho Takuan mentored Musashi or not is debated, but he did exist and there is supposedly a Japanese pickle named after him. Soho Takuan is also the basis for a character named Dakuan from Jubei Ninja Chronicles, which several SamSho designers worked on. This is noteworthy because Caffeine Nicotine supposedly bears a striking resemblence to Dakuan. However, I am not familiar with the source material, so I have no clue when it was made and could not even guess which of the two came first.
The manga that the character that Charlotte is based on comes from was worked on by a few of the members of the development team from SamSho 1.
Yagyu Jubei is based on a real samurai named Yagyu Jubei. Yagyu Jubei wore a eye patch and was rumored to have become a samurai ninja (!) who disguised himself with a amigasa like Yagyu Jubei wears in the game. In the book "Musashi", Yagyu Jubei is depicted as having retired to a secluded life in a hut in a bamboo forest, again mirrored by Yagyu Jubei in SamSho.
Wan Fu is probably based on two historical Chinese figures. First is Wang Ts-bin Wu, who later became known as Da Dao Wang Wu ("Big Scimitar Wang Wu"). Other the the similarities in their names, Wang Wu and Wan Fu share a reddish complexion, both are armed with Dao Swords, and both live in the same rough historical period. Second is King Wu Wang. King Wu Wang intended to unify all of China, and in SamSho II the short blurb about Wan Fu says that he is destined to unify all of China. Both King Wu Wang and Wan Fu are king of Sian and both are military conquerors. Wan Fu's pigtail may be a reference to the period when the Manchus required all Chinese citizens to wear pigtails, though this seems improbable.
Genjuro Kibegami is HEAVILY inspired by the card game Hanafuda, and many of his moves directly reference the rules of the game (I could explain how if anybody likes) or even show Hanafuda cards. His level in SamSho II is based on the designs of Hanafuda cards. It is also possible that he is named after the main character from Jubei Ninja Chronicles, Kibegami Jubei. Again, several of the members of the development team for SamSho also worked on Jubei Ninja Chronicles.
Like Tam Tam, Cham Cham is a ambiguos amalgamation of various references, but it is worth noting that there was a pre-Incan society called the Chimu, whose capital was called Chan Chan.
No mention of Mai in Haohmaru's ending in SamSho 1?
Why in the holy crap is the author complaining about Seiger being missing in the games after SSII? NOBODY likes him!
I would agree that the SS! games are not as good as the other NGPC fighters, but I still really dig both of them.
Why no url for Samurai Shodown Forever at the end? Did that site go down or something?

While I don't have as much to say as the previous two (My knowledge of SamSho is limited outside of what's strictly presented in the games), it definitely was a fantastically done article, and I very much enjoyed reading it.

Fair warning here. I'm going to enter fanboy mode, and it's rather sort of scary. Here I go: okay, this article instantly fails because although Samurai Spirits 2: Asura Zanmaden was discussed and has screencaps and all, it DOES NOT describe that it uses Aoi Nanase's (!!!!!11) art style (those DVD covers were drawn by her) as apparently her doujinshi (she hits borderline nudity at times, but almost all of her stuff is clean) was so popular with the fans (I dare say she did a better job than the original artwork) that Sunrise (I believe that was the studio that handled this since they also animated Seraphim Call) decided to use hers instead. /end rant /go to bed

Thanks guys, I knew I could count on you all to point out anything I may have missed! The Nakoruru game is as of yet uncovered - for the moment, I was just going to put up a cover and a quick summary. But unfortunately, no one seems to have actually played it, so until it shows up on eBay again, that'll have to do. There's also that Iroha sim game coming up soon, though I forget when. Isn't Yagyu Jubei based on..well, Yagyu Jubei? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yagyu_JubeiI never heard of the other Yagyu, and while it sounds similar (eye patch and all), I think this is the more direct reference. What's the URL for Samurai Shodown Forver?

You k now what else you forgot to mention that Genjuro's mother's a whore and was sleeping with a man that looks like Haohmaru.
Zankuro is also based off a Kenshin Character and Yoshitora was designed by the man behind Kenshin WHO WAS A HUGE FAN of the series to begin with.

OOPS! That was a mistake on my part. I mixed up his name with the name of his grandfather. Yagyu Jubei is the historical figure that I was referring to. Samurai Shodown Forever is probably the only site I have found (other than Smash Forums) that is dedicated to a lone fighting game series that actually has a relatively active message board. People there are much nicer (at least relatively speaking) than at other fighting game forums, so it's worth taking a look.

Hmmm, I thought it mentioned that the SSV cast was designed by Nobuhiro Watsuki. I guess I'll double check.
Other stuff I should add now that I think about it - Basara's last name, Kubikiri, literally means "Cutthroat".

-You guys might want to mention that the old sensei that appears in "Ninja Scroll" is pretty much an exact copy of Nicotine.
-Yuga, Gandara and Taizan also appear in NGPC's SS2!.

Wow, what an excellent article. Anyway, just 2 minor omissions: SSI doesn't have "Samurai Spirits" as the JP title header and Tenka doesn't have "Samurai Shodown VI" as the US/world title header.

HUZ-FUCKING-ZAH!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D This just rules, I'm serious. SS2 is unquestionably my favorite Neo Geo title of all time, and I love SS4 to so much death. Can't wait 'till it gets out and rolling! A random sentiment, though: I keep trying to wrap my mind around Nakky and Rimmy being the most popular characters of the series. I really want to find my mind roaming to another explanation besides "It's a lolicon thing..." can somebody supplant this? (Don't get me wrong, I think they're awesome and all, but as far as my favorite goes... dead tie between Genjuro and Hanzo.)
