Here's a question for you Genesis owners: What games use the XYZ buttons on the 2nd and 3rd gen controllers? The only games I've seen where they have any function at all, it's usually something that the ABC buttons already do (like jumping in Sonic.)
edit: dual already mentioned this gay batman game uses them, apparently

Ranger X definitely needs to be played with a XYZ button Genesis Pad, as it makes it better and enjoyable compared to the regular ABC Genesis Pad

Streets of Rage III uses them as a one-button alternate method for doing the moves that would otherwise require more complex commands.

Eternal Champions definitely used them. I want to say that Comix Zone did, too. I can't say for sure on the first Mortal Kombat, but the later ones definitely did.

Mortal Kombat 3 Maximum Carnage Zombies Ate my Neighbours(Zombies in Europe)having 6 buttons makes Cycling though items easy Need a 6 button Joy pad to be played properly well Zombies don,t but it makes it alot easyier having one. King of The Monsters dose not even work with 6 Button Joypads its the only game I know of that dose this.

Story of Thor (Beyond Oasis) used them to skip instantly to the map/weapons/items without having to flick through the menus.

I can confirm that Comix Zone uses them. It allows you to access your items instantly without having to scroll through them. Not a huge deal, but still nice.

Definitely great for Ranger X- being able to use your cycle to ram enemies while shooting them, or get through some nasty damage floors in Stage 6 make it a nice feature.
I also found it highly useful, if not necessary for play Mortal Kombat 3.

I don't care if I'm in the mother of all minorities here, but I liked Batman Forever.
Anyway, aside from the oddball game in various other genres, it was basically used for fighting/wrestling. A lot of the WWF games(all, but Super Wrestlemania, the first one) were easier with 6 buttons, as with a 3 button controller you'd use 2 buttons at once for a lot of different moves.

Many of the 32X games had functions that were inaccessible without a 6-button. Star Wars Arcade for instance used one of the top row to change from first person to third. All games technically didn't required the 6-button pad but as most of the posters have already said, certain games are MUCH better played with one. Plus, the D-Pad is much more comfortable than the original 3-button.

Brutal is another 6-button fighter that used all 6 buttons. Story of Thor (Beyond Oasis) used them to skip instantly to the map/weapons/items without having to flick through the menus. The coolest thing is that it's the only game I know of to have a useful function (weapon switching) with the Mode button.
