I've been trying to play a couple of MSX games on various emulators (namely Contra and Ikari Warriors) and for some reason neither game allows me to shoot diagonally unless its Up-Right or Down-Right. I don't have this problem when emulating other platforms and I know its possible to shoot in all eight directions in both games (at least in Contra) since I've videos of players doing it. Is this normal behaviour in all MSX computers? If so, can it be solved by using a game controller instead?

Are you using the keyboard? if yes then yeah it will probably work fine with a controller.

If you use a keyboard, there's nothing you can do as far as I know.

I played the game again with a proper controller and did a lot better this time. I almost got to the final stage. The MSX2 Contra is really not that hard if you approach it different from the other Contra games.

It's normal in just about all emulators unfortunately.

Yeah, but for some reason I never encountered this problem with MAME.

You've never played the MSX2 Contra before? I'm amazed

Actually, I did a couple of times in the past and I thought it was the worst game in the series (having never played the Appaloosa games mind you). I began playing it again recently, but taking a different approach.
The MSX2 Contra is actually quite a bit easy if you think of it as an action puzzle game instead of a shoot-em-up like the arcade and NES games. There's actually a limit to how many bullets an enemy can shoot and since the screen doesn't actually scroll, there's really no hurry to get to the next area. The Magma stages in the latter half are quite a bitch though.
