So far it's been a good year for freeware releases and I think that a serious competitor for this year's best freeware game is Desktop Dungeons.DD is basically a simplified roguelike where the player has to explore a simple level in order to level up and defeat the boss.Enemies and bosses don't move but have specific characteristics ( for example, the Meat Men have lots of HP while the Goo Balls are very resistant to physical attacks ).Additionally, you have a number of magic spells at your disposal and you can choose to worship a god praying on his shrine. Each God has his advantages but some of them can be easily ticked off;for example the god of battle Taurog will be happy if you slay enemies with physical attacks but he's not very keen on magic. The game is very simple, but what makes it special is the wealth of options you can choose from and the huge number of unlockables. Its only fault is that sometimes you have to rely on luck, but which roguelike doesn't?If you are in roguelikes and you are looking for short but intense games you'll love this game.

I caught this over at Rock, Paper, Shotgun and it was too charming not to post: Recettear: An Item Shop's TaleBasically it's an RPG/simulator where you run one of those shops you buy stuff from in every RPG. I believe the idea has been done before, but it sounds like a lot of fun and an unusual take on the genre. In terms of story, you play Recette, whose father has gone missing. Shortly thereafter a fairy named Tear comes to collect a life debt that he owed. As Recette, you decide to open an item shop with the fairy called...Recettear. If you hate puns and goofy anime stuff, it's safe to say this game won't appeal to you. The game is being localized by an indie group who bought the distribution rights from the Japanese creators. This is probably one of the few cases where a doujin game has not only crossed over to our shores, but also received an official translation. The game is slated to cost $20 and will have roughly 15-20 hours of original content in addition to New Game+ and extra modes. Release date is TBA. Hopefully if this title does well enough we'll see more doujin games translated and released here. A demo with the first week of gameplay can be downloaded here: Recettear demo.

Dubloon is a great little JRpg with a pirate theme (it may or may not have taken some inspirations from One Piece) and 8-bit style graphics. You have to get used to the odd mouse-driven interface - although it's better to use the keyboard in combination - but it makes up for some interesting gameplay features, like special objects you can place or direct on the playfield to solve puzzles or open passageways. There aren't random fights and combat is done with a mix of ATB system and action-commands for special attacks or defense. While sailing to a new island it switches to a shooting section but with the exception of two segments where you haven an energy bar, it's just a bonus - so when going to old islands you can just skip it. The game world isn't very large and overall the game isn't going to last more than 6-7 hours but it has plenty to offer among puzzles, achievements, loot (find 100% to achieve the best ending) and other secrets; it also requires very little grinding to proceed. Highly recommended. banov.blogspot.comimages.cdn.gamejolt.com/games/254/screenshots/254_5348.jpg --- --- --- Demakes aren't a novelty by now, but what about a contest based on demakes of only indie games? Gamejolt just held one: gamejolt.com/community/forums/topics/game-jolt-official-indie-game-demake-contest-it-s-over/574/So far I've tried only a few. Two of the winners, Warning Foregone and Sulkeis, are good games that stand on their own - the second has areas and ideas I don't remember from the original. Avoid the N and Canabalt demakes. Plants VS Zombies retro is extremely limited but I was fresh from playing the original. Hold Off Brownish-Yellow is nice (even more if you consider that it demakes on of the more obscure games from the author of Jumper and An Untitled Story). I hoped more from the Karoshi demake - at least it doesn't forget that there's always a key to a certain level... --- --- --- Action Fist is a fun platform shooter with great boss battles. One level also features a pseudo-3D view. Beside the cute retro graphics and music, it's very polished - enemies aren't mindless and they'll use their jetpacks to reach you or avoid falling in pits. Checkpoints are plenty and well placed. It can also be enjoyed by two players and features several unlockables - I haven't seen the additional characters yet but I'm told they play differently from the regular ones. Only things I didn't like: the color mechanic isn't as useful as it should (you may end up with a yellow weapon and a blue one while there's a majority of green enemies in that section, for example), and I found most of the sound effects bad. teknopants.com/games/actionfist/Also check the most recent work from the same author, Shoot First, a bizarre mix of shooting and roguelike. Fish Face, Uberleben and Gravortex are also worth mentioning.

This isn't an indie game link (technically) but I felt it worth sharing: Kongregate bought by GameStopYes, a popular Flash gaming hub just got bought (for an undisclosed amount) by what I imagine is everyone's least favorite game retailer. We'll see how this affects things in the future...

So it's going to be a hub for used flash games now?

Frogatto is a lush looking indie platformer that was released this week for PC, Mac and Linux. The main character looks like a cross between Kirby and Rayman and the graphic style is reminiscent of many old school platformer games. Frogatto can use his tongue to capture enemies and then spit them out, just like Kirby. Frogatto's tongue can also be upgraded using the gold coins you find throughout the levels. There are 30 levels spread over six worlds to play through, so this one should last you a while. The only major issue are the lack of save slots: you only get one to play with. This may not be a huge issue if you're playing alone, but might be a problem if you have a sibling or friend that would like to try out the game.

I find it weird how little I check this thread considering how much I like indie games... maybe it's my computer's not being able to play pretty much any game that causes it? Yeah that must be it...

Dustforce is an interesting platformer starring a bunch of ninja janitors in their neverending quest to ensure that the world is properly dusted. I'm not dextrous enough to really enjoy this one, but I really like the look and feel of the game. It's certainly worth a try, and I fully expect to see some mindboggling speedruns come out of this one. The full version isn't out, but the demo is avaliable here. - HC

A long post this time, but there's been quite a few promising released in the last few days. First off, we have Privates, an edutainment title with a twist: you play a wee man who has to stop STDs in a twin stick style shooter. The game has its tongue planted firmly in cheek and promises to be safe fun for everyone. Just how many more puns can I make about this game? Under the Garden is a sidescrolling survival sim not unlike the survival mode in Minecraft. As a man trapped in a forest, you must find shelter, harvest wood for fires, and hunt animals for food with each of the 3 tools given to you. Your game is saved anytime you start a fire in a shelter. The ultimate goal is both to survive and explore as much of the forest as you can. Achievement Unlocked 2 is the sequel to Achievement Unlocked, both of which are huge parodies of the modern achievement system. AU2 has 250 achievements for you OCD types to find and collect. There is a handy walkthrough that tells you how to earn each achievement, and the video in the link is a 12 minute speedrun of the entire game. In the coming soon pile we have Vertical Drop Heroes, a vertical roguelike. Play as any of 5 heroes, collect over 25 hats, and make your way down, down, down until you can't go downs no more. The game doesn't have a release date set but should appear on a flash portal near you soon. That's it for now, hopefully one of these games piques your interest.

Halo 2600, which is pretty much what it sounds like, Halo ported to the Atari 2600. You can download the Rom from this thread right here, as well as read the game's origin story. Cartridge copies were sold at CGE, I know there was talk of making another batch to sell online, but I haven't really been following. edit... and I'd like to add that this game was created by Ed Fries, if that matters to anyone. And yes, this post is about two weeks after the fact, but I've just got around to playing it, and felt it deserved mention in this thread.

Momodora is an action platformer with visuals inspired by Cave Story. The inspiration stops there as it is far more straightforward than Cave Story. The plot involves an orphan girl's search for treasures and answers in a network of caves and ruins. She starts her journey with a magical leaf that acts like a sword, and eventually gains more weapons as she progress through the tunnels. The game should only take about an hour to complete and culminates in a cool boss battle.

Don't know if it's been posted, but oh well. homepage3.nifty.com/rfish/index_e.htmlElona is a japanese rogue-like. I've spent hours upon hours exploring this gigantic randomly generated world of insanity. Having a companion be impregnated by aliens and witnessing them being unleashed on innocent NPCs, being killed by a stone thrown by an old man displeased with your piano-playing skills, etc. An immensely deep RPG that you can constantly laugh at is just my type of game. But, you can check out the wikipedia article for more information. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elona_(video_game)
